DIY Can Fitting
 

Howdy Forum - hope everyone is well :o

Just a quick question - i have just fitted a new Fuel Exhaust Can and in the instructions it says to use sealant ?!?!?! Not having any to hand i carried on regardless, but am now wondering if i should revisit and use some. :confused:

Will the sealant make much/any difference etc ... :confused:

Also have noticed a slight drop in performance - not sure if its related but it'd be one hell uv a coincidence it it ain't

If you can see fumes leaking out where the pipes join then take it off and put a bit of exhaust sealant on (is only a couple of quid from autoshop) If you can't see anything escaping all is well - just leave it and stop worrying.

Plenty people on here didn't bother with the sealant and had no problems.

When I fitted my Rene system on, I first did it without sealant to make sure it fitted properly.

Without the sealant, there were LOADS of places where air was getting out, and causing insane amounts of popping and banging.

I then refitted it with sealant and it seemed a lot happier.

You can get exhaust sealant from Halfords or any similar place.

Or you can just use Builder's silicone (Mastic) if you have any handy. Put loads on so it squishes out as you assemble, DONT try to wipe it off, let it dry first and the excess should rub away with a dry clothy and elbow grease

i fitted a carbon can co steel ovel a few weeks ago.
used no sealant, juist tightened the clips as mich as poss' & there are no leaks

I didnt use any when fitting my blueflame, it was a tight fit and tight enough.

Put you hand around the joint (when the exhaust is cold) and you will beable to feel hot air leaking out, if its bad then use some silicone.

The exhaust paste which goes hard when hot makes a complete mess and makes it very hard to ever seperate the pipes again, at least that how my experience of the stuff has always gone. I would suggest to anyone to never use it unless its on a car and not visable.

Just plain old clear silicone sealant, the kind you use on your bathtub and around your windows. I would have used the expensive exhaust stuff, but went from the advice on this site and have had no problems at all.

Yeah basic silicone stuff is fine, as to the performance issue, with just a slipon I'd expect it to run fine, although it's slightly less restrictive than the standard one, however if the air filter is a bit tired then that could account for it, or perhaps one of the K&N road replacements, if it's already got one then clean it ?

just as a matter of interest did you do anything else at the same time ?

doesn't the silicone melt and go all gooey when it gets hot?
