Wires cut (attempted theft) - advice on how to get it running again
 

Hi,

I came back to my bike to find it wouldn't start as the wires had been cut. I'm quite a new to biking but I got advice that connecting the wires again using bullet holes and additional wires as they had been shortened and then wrapping it up with insulation tape should get it running again. However after doing this I found the 30amp fuse had blown, so I have switched this with the spare and now when turning the key it lights up and it tries turning over and starting but fails to.

I assume the wiring must all be correct as it lights up with I turn the key (I was a little unsure as there were two red wires), so I'm not sure of what the problem could be, any help and advice would be appreciated?

2000 SV650S, the wires just below the throttle.

if its the small black and yellow wires then they will most likely have to be replaced..
if its the BIG chunky wires then your throttle wont work.
i doubt that your method of bodging it would work... i have been wrong in the past though.. lol

There are around 7 wires, yellow, two oranges, two red etc. The recovery guy mentioned that he had wired up a 2000 SV650S before and once that's done it should light up when the key is turned. I had to also replace the 30 amp fuse with the spare one and once that was done, turning the key shows that the electics are working again as it lights up, however it doesn't turn over and start. I'm sure someone on here must have had a similar problem as this before?

sounds like the kill switch my not be wired up?
or check the wires on the bottom clutch lever?

kill switch appears to work, unsure about the clutch lever as I'm sure previously I was able to put the bike in gear without starting it and now I can't?

Should I just follow the clutch lever wires? Does it interact with the wires that were cut? The only thing that I was not sure about when I wired the bike were the two red wires and if I had selected the right ones? I assume I had otherwise the fuse would have blown?

I'd say check the kill switch wiring and that it's not in gear and other obvious things like that. Sidestand switch? Check around the bike for anything else they might have done. Doesn't sound like they're very good at what they do so anything may have been played with. Is there a switch connected to the clutch? I assume so as you have to pull the clutch to start it but don't know if it's on the lever. If you've repaired the wires so you've basically got the same cross sectional area of wire all the way it should be fine (Not reducing the cable size I mean) although I wouldn't keep bullets if they can be pulled out. You can get straight through crimps which should be fine.

Edit: Just read Hovis thing about the clutch lever.

You might have the two reds the wrong way round and it wouldn't necesarilly blow a fuse. A fuse blows when there's too much current.

how does the kill switch apear to work, if it wont start?
