sv starter motors
Hi all, this is my 1st time post.
I'm just wondering if anyone could advise me here. I'm struggling to start my SV after the winter. The batteries fine - given it a full charge. When i attempt to start the bike tho I get a very rapid clicking coming from the starter relay. I think that its the starter motor to blame? Anyways, I've found a reasonably priced second hand starter motor, this is from a K4 sv. Mines is a 99 model. Does anyone know if this will fit? it looks like it will but I can't be sure. Any advice on this would be most welcome! Cheers.8) |
Re: sv starter motors
The rapid clicking is classic symptoms of not enough electrical "grunt" getting through.
This can be either the battery not being able to deliver the current, or some bad connections. If you're absolutely sure the battery is OK then check all major connections and terminals. Take them apart and clean them, removing any sign of corrosion, and add a little vaseline when refitting. |
Re: sv starter motors
Get some jump leads and try connect directly to the starter motor terminal, that eliminates the possibility of it being anything but the motor.
Personally I think your battery's knackered. |
Re: sv starter motors
Dont know if that fits but not many parts are the same between curvy and pointy.Your problem is probably not the starter anyway. If your battery was flat over winter it will possibly be shagged by now,and also have you checked all the connections? If your battery is definitely good try running a wire direct to the starter motor to see if it works.

Blimey I was too slow there.

Re: sv starter motors
Wow, thats a speedy reply
Thanks for the advice, I'll give that a go before shelling out on new parts. The trouble is that I'm a complete numpty when it comes to mechanics :smt102 |
Re: sv starter motors
I've tried running a wire from the battery to the starter and am getting nothing. I may be doing it wrong tho.
The battery was new in October, so I'd have thought it should still be good. I'll give it another overnight blast on the charger and see if that makes any difference. |
Re: sv starter motors
No that's not going to eliminate the battery as a possible problem at all, you need to jump it from another battery which has a charge in it or a booster pack or something like that.

Re: sv starter motors
Sounds like your battery is possibly not holding its charge, as the others have said the clicking noise is the relay under the seat clicking as theres not enough current available to turn the starter motor over.
If your battery was new in October it should still be OK. How did you charge it ? |
Re: sv starter motors
An overnight trickle charge on a 12V battery charger.
