Paging the auto-electricians

Would a YTX9-BS battery have enough cranking power for an SV650?

Standard battery is a YTX12-BS, but it's just that little bit too tall when you put a Gixer shock in. A YTX9-BS is the same width and length but not as tall, so you wouldn't have to cut the seat to make it fit properly.

When I had my Bandit 600 I replaced the YTX9 battery with a YTX12 because both the 600 and 1200 run the same alternator but the 600 battery was shorter with huge block of rubber underneath it to bring the height up. The 1200 had a YTX12-BS as standard, so I knew my 600 alternator would be up to keeping it charged.

I'm just trying to make the Gixer shock swop tidier and easier.

Yes, I had/have one in my trackbike ... but dude they are the same PHYSICAL size ;)

Double checks:- ... that is weird ... the YTX12 is actually taller then the one I have here ...

YTX12 130mm

YTX9 105mm

Mystery solved the YT12 (and YTX9) - which is what I have - are both smaller than the YTX12 ...
My YT12A-BS I have sat here is 105mm ...

So in summery, get a YT12A-BS, everyone is happy!!! :D

p.s. it is the YT12A-BS that is stock for the SV, not the taller YTX12 ...

Yes, it will work, but overall capacity is lower, in practice this means that if it doesn't start it will turn over fewer times before being exhausted.

But I'm sure you knew that.

You'd be better off with a YTZ series battery, the cold cranking current is higher for the same physical size battery than a YTX equivalent.

I had a YTZ10S on my Deauville (650 V-twin) from new and it started it perfectly.

Check out the Yuasa site for technical spec and "CCA" (cold cranking amperage) e.g. YTZ10S

(PS - I replaced it recently and fitted a YTZ12S because it would fit, but the 14 is higher CCA and physically the same size. Honda dealers are often as good a place as any to get genuine Yuasa batteries, the YTZ12S cost me exactly £50)

Cool, thanks. My worry was that being a V-Twin the YTX9 wouldn't be up to spinning it over fast enough to fire up on a cold morning.

Yep, got a YTX9-BS and it starts fine.

As others have pointed out, there are better options than the YTX9-BS mind ;)

The race bike used a YTZ7 for two seasons with no problems and that was 700cc high comp:rambo:

I just took off the little square block of foam from underneath my seat when I fitted the Gixxer shock. That worked

Did you just sit the battery on top of the shock resevoir? I made a new battery box because it looked like a right bodge without it, not to mention the risk of the resevoir fretting away at the battery and it peeing acid down the frame in future. With the battery box in the battery sits under pressure from the seat and you have to push down hard on it in order to put the seat screws in, not good - so I cut a rectangle from under the seat to give the battery room and a foam top.
