Paedophile Powers

Quote:

Parents may get new powers to check if people with access to their children have paedophile convictions. The scheme could be rolled out across England and Wales if trials in four regions are successful.
It will allow single mothers to ask police whether a named individual - such as a carer or new partner - has child sex convictions.
I can't help but feel the real problem has been missed

sorry to derail the thread on such a sensitive subject, but it reminded me of watching the best bits of never mind the buzzcocks the other night.

I think this whole idea is a serious mistake, people power in emotive circumstances like these very rarely does any good.

Remember the effect of people power a few years back? - a Paediatrician was forced from her home, well done the tabloid fuelled mob - you must be so proud.

Didn't that turn out to be an urban myth?

edit: while i'm here i might as well comment on topic: it seems people get hysterical about what **might** happen to them or their family when in reality there are things they should be far more concerned about, recently on the bbc news in the south they had an article about knives in school, and how they've deployed metal detecting wands to all the city schools in the region, about half way through they let slip that there's only been 2 incidents of pupils carrying knives in the region, and no attacks/injuries - i can't help but think the money would have been better spent on making the roads outside the schools safer, as i'm sure there would have been at least 2 incidents involving children and vehicles...

i never said i thought it was a "mob" or anything like that, simply posted a link of the likely source of the rumour. there was another incident, where a convicted sex offender in portsmouth was attacked by a mob - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/865633.stm - whether it's justified to attack someone who has been convicted of a crime and served their sentence or not isn't the specialised area of expertise of the mob mentality...

I think one of the interesting things in the original post is the reference to 'single mothers'. Are single dads tarred with some sort of brush? Or happily married couples? Civil partnerships etc? Is the quote complete or edited to promote discussion?
