Can I jack up a bike on the manifold/downpipe or sump?
 

Got me a front tyre to change but no paddock stand. Is it ok to jack up[ a bike on the sump or manifold carefully?

Alternatively how about using my rear paddock stand with the cups under the bits in green in the picture with the bits in blue to stop it sliding off? (with the steering lock on or with the front forks locked straight)

Suzy is sat on axle stands under the engine block, with an Abba stand ont subframe, if thats any help

I've jacked the SV and my CBR up many times. I wouldn't do it on the pipe, its possible but personally I wouldn't. Under the sump is fine, I use a bit of card to soften and spread the load.

Rear on paddock stand, trolley jack under the sump with a 6" piece of skirting board to spread the load and not damage anything. I don't jack bikes up on downpipes cos the jack always slips.

Failing that I use Bjorn Again, my Abba stand copy.

Haven't got axle stands or an Abba! Thanks anyway.

Trolley Jack's in Lincolnshire and I haven't even got any wood! What a Loohoohooser eh?

I'll get me some off cuts of wood and the missus down the garage with me to help and Jack it on the sump then I think. I'll try my rear stand method though I think (again with missus ready to catch the bike-He he)

The bloke along the road (honestly not me) was using an upturned milk crate. Under the pipes too. Looked OK but hmmmmmm

Upturned plastic beer crate and a couple of wooden wedges to stead under the sump will get you out of trouble
N.B.Be careful when replacing the speedo drive and do not overtighten the front spindle

Back before I invested in a paddock stand I used to use various lumps of wood.

Position them next to the sump, put your foot on the side stand, hold the front brake, and rear subframe, lift the rear into the air. With your spare foot kick the wood underneath the sump.

Build it up right, and you can happily get both wheels off the floor. I think I have a picture somewhere...

+1 that is the way to do it for sure ... depending on how far you lean it, what 70% of the load is then on the sidestand, so no change of damaging the engine!!!! 8)

Trying to use an under fork stand will make the wheel change hard as invariably there isn't exactly 50/50 weight distribution, so one leg end up higher than the other at trying to put spindle back in time ;)

And without the rear supported or on a stand could be a tad wobbly...
