Combatting Rust
Anyone had much dealing with rust. I got a trailer of fleabay and its rather rusty underneath. Nothing is galvanised. I've stripped it down and started to wire brush process to clean it up. Its not scaley thick but mostly surface rust and is cleaning up ok.
I was thinking about coating it with hammerite or something but wondered if I should put some chemicals over it to get all the rust off or...prime it with something first. Any ideas?? |
Re: Combatting Rust
have a look at the Frost online catalogue. I seem to remember that they do a pretty good product for converting rust / protecting metal.

Re: Combatting Rust
Waxoyl is what my friend uses on his old VW, it's really thick but apparently works really well.

Re: Combatting Rust
granville from frosts is the best stuff ive come across and ive used alot of rust stuff lol
see here.http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.a...tSubcat=Others either that or get it sandblasted and then just spray it, ive got a blaster so do all my own work but local companys dont charge much, and is a lot easier than doing it with a wire brush, specially if your going to keep the trailer. hth cheers mark. |

Re: Combatting Rust
Deal with the rust before painting or waxing. If you don't, it'll continue to rust under the coating. There are plenty of phosphoric acid based preps out there to convert the rust to metal and leave a good protective coat onto which you can paint, etc. Personally, I like and use Kurust on my old clunkers. It leaves a nice blue-black coat, ready for paint.

Re: Combatting Rust
<Deliberately overlooks the fact that the rust isn't on the Tuono>
Thats what you get with shoddy Italian manufacturing. ;) :) |

I reckon there are three steps to make sure you don't have to do it again in a hurry: 1. Clean up as much as possible then treat with anti-rust treatment like Kurust 2. Paint it (Hammerite is probably OK for a trailer) 3. Waxoyl it for durability (Waxoyl never dries fully, so doesn't chip off when hit by inevitable road crud/stones etc.) |
Re: Combatting Rust
I'd go with chazzy and Ruffy.
