I can only let you have 10L sir ..
Just went to go fill up my van and jerry cans in preparation for a trackday on Monday ..
I went to ASDA DIY card pump (as I always do, coz that way I don't have to talk to humans and queue ;)) .. got all my jerry cans out (2*20L and 1*5L) and cracked the cap of the van (petrol van). Before I started filling, Mr kiosk wandered over and said "sorry, you can only have 10L in the cans, so 10L in one of the big cans or 5L in the small one" ... I said "eh?" ... he said the "law says we can only dispense a maximum of 10L and only in one can sir" .. Further to that I stated "But I can put 50L in my van and 10L in a can" "yes sir"... I said "What's the rationale behind that then, seems stupid, I'm still sitting on 60L of fuel" He said "it is not stupid sir, we are only allowed to dispense 10L into a can, its the law" .. so I said "But I could go to 5 different petrol stations, put in 10L in cans at 4 and 5L in at the final one and still be driving around with 45L of fuel in full cans ... how about I just put 10L in at a time here but circle round the garage 4 times .. " ... "we are only allowed to dispense 10L in cans sir" ... I could see I had reached the limit of his intellect by throwing the word rationale at him :D so I put 2 of the cans away and put 10L (made sure I put 10.1L in to spite him!! ... oops a daisy :D) then 46L in the van ... I then went down the next petrol station along (which was 2p a litre more expensive, hence why I went to ASDA in the first place :( ) and keeping the cans in the side door this time, and picking a pump so they didn't have line of sight to see I was filling cans, not the van tank. I put the remaining 35L (actually 36L? :D) of fuel in my cans to fill them up ... so that dude at ASDA cost me about an extra £2 .. if you include the extra bit of fuel to the next station and the 72p extra I paid for their fuel .. :( Then when I got home I filled the tank up on bike #1 and ended up fumbling the can and it spilt everywhere ... like over my front TYRE!! :smt013 It was a wide neck job, so prolly spilt a litre of fuel before I got the can back upright, so another £1.07 down the pan and a slightly melted front tyre!! ANYWAY :D .. my point being - word of warning if you ever want to buy more than 10L of fuel in jerry cans (you can't even fill 2*5L cans, that is max of 10L in one can), evidently the law says you cant ... To be fair the dude is only allowed to dispense 10L in a can he is only allowed to do that, but I found it funny how he couldn't compute what I was saying/suggested to him!! :D .. evidently petrol fumes 8hrs a day does that to a man!! Rant over!! ;) |

Those metal jerry cans are like used by the military in like war zones and have been since time began ... it is probably fair to say that fuel in one of those cans is probably safer than it is in any car/van fuel tank!! ;) Quote:

Re: I can only let you have 10L sir ..
Petrol stations are quite often weird. The problem is that most of them are franchised and the owners run them like their own little kingdoms.
I was filling my bike up today at an Esso and some bloke i had never met pulls up beside me and asks me to stick a tenner in his tank(of his rather tasty KTM). He held out the cash and i took it and said no problem and pumped the gas in. When i went in to pay, the monkey at the till tried to go off on one. Apparently sharing the pump isn't allowed. Bah to them. |

Yes, he was just doing his job, Jobsworth style! :toss:
Unless he was being watched by a health and safety officer or a jobsworth boss. I regularly fill 2x 5L jerry cans. Any petrol attendant knows the law, but most choose to pretend they haven't seen you and stay in thier cosy wee kiosks. |
