Simple website software - which is good for a beginner?
 

Hello mighty .org,

I've seen plenty IT related threads here in my short time here so far.

FYI, I work as a sys admin, never really touched on the coding / development side of things. But more and more I find myself interested in creating a website. Just a simple creation - a few family pitures maybe.

I unerstand the hosting side of it (to a certain extent), but I have no idea where to start with the web site part of it. I am assuming there must be some software out there with pre-built templates that I can use.

Any recommendations anyone? Thanks in advance.

I've always liked Dreamweaver, but it does take a bit of getting used to. My lad had never built a site before, but did THIS for The Crewe Honda Centre on Microsoft Front Page, fairly simple drap & drop.

Frontpage will teach you nothing.

You'll be best off jumping in with dreamweaver.

If you want even simpler 'drag and drop', use 1and1 hosting. Not only do you get the hosting services you also get a range of website building 'tools' which are ideal for a beginning (or intermediate..) user..

I'd head straight for dreamweaver, maybe fireworks if you're feeling lucky! I use a combination of dreamweaver and flash for my bits.

Second Dreamweaver as very good tool that'll do far more than you ever need. It's later iterations are perhaps too good tho and take a while to get used too. Frontpage Express is horrible, but it's kinda free (is it? not sure, it seems to be on every other machine I see, guessing it's bundled with something) and is very basic at the front end, but purists will point out that it does horrible things to the back end code.

Given that I'm rapidly approaching crusty-old-IT-nerd status (at age 33, jeez), I'd still say notepad is the best editor. I'd certainly say start with notepad because it'll teach you to take all the crud out that Frontpage et-all dumps in your code. You can do a hell of a lot with just notepad and the <table> tags.
