The new bike test coming soon.

My girlfriends dad is a DAS instructor amongst other things and the DSA ran an example day for all the local schools instructors and local examiners.

3 very competent riders came off doing the 32mph swerve manouvere!!!!!!!

The DSA set up the speed camera and course identical to the mm as the final test centre are going to be and all the instructors said the swerve was way to tight for 32mph......and all the DSA people said 'well it wont be changing'

So there you go, I can imagine if experienced people are able to fall off on the new test.....god help people doing a 3 - 5 day DAS with no previous experience.

(One of them did a quite amazing high side as he lost the rear in the damp on the swerve).

I have a mate who is an instructor and he was one of the few who were invited on the first trial of the new test. He did say that some instructors crashed then as well. :)

Hmm, I have two folk at work (one colleague, one customer) planning on doing DAS this year. Will tell them about this.

I think it comes in in October, so get them to do their DAS asap.

Maybe the DSA are just being really forward thinking.... after all part of riding a bike is accepting that one day you may come off... so they're just making sure that you get it done early in your biking career

i'd bet the scheme will last until someone comes off, sues the DSA saying the manoeuvre was unreasonably difficult for a learner, the expert instructor will agree, the DSA won't have a case to show that it'll actually do anything for safety, case closed, help yourself to several million compensation as you pass go...

We can only hope. I think the new test is clearly just that hard to reduce the number of bikers on the road. There was talk at the last DSA conference in November that this test is the first phase as a trial and then they will be implementing a harder test over the next 5 years. All in the name of safety. Because if no one rides a bike then no accidents can occur!

If they are trialling it now then it will be a few months before it will become part of the test, I think Tim's quote above is accurate but it would be the earliest we see it.

Re: The new bike test coming soon.

The new centres for the test are not all in place either. For example those wishin to take their test in the Penzance Area have to travel over 100 miles to their nearest centre. + 1 on the possible litigatation when someone injures themselves.

If the test is trying to find out the capabilities of a new rider where accidents and mistakes happen in a controlled environment, then its not a real test because our public roads and other road users are real world scenarios. I guess only time will tell!
