DAFT question...

Washing up liquid? Always used it on my old CB...
Is it generally alright to use?

NO, NO and NO STOP using it, and buy proper stuff. If you now have a Suzuki it will rust as you wash it., Fairy and any washing up liquid has salt in it so rather than washing it off you are putting corrosive stuff back on the bike.

you honda probably survives cos of its build quality. but if ou want the SV to survive do not use it. There are plenty of good bike cleaners to use.

It also removes protective waxs from paints and oil/grease from areas where you really dont want it to be removed.

It also fades paintwork quite quickly.

Neio, does it have salt in it? As in rock salt / NaCl?

Anyway, I think it would be fine - but its best to use proper car/bike wash, the detergents are a bit more powerfull and will remove stubborn grime better.

Not as kind to your hands though

I'm pretty sure it does, but just had to hunt around to check - Ecover washing up liquid definitely does - they seem to be about the only brand who are willing to 'fess up their ingredients list: http://www.ecover.com/gb/en/Products...s+lemon+UK.htm

Whether the quantities are anything to worry about is a different matter which I can't answer though.

My solution is to allow a protective layer of grime to build up and coat your bike. It's worked for me :D

Ah i see...hmm i shall i keep the fairy next to the sink then...
What do people use to clean their bikes with? Anything highly recommended? I may pop to j and s and have a look see...

I use car shampoo, some simple tescos stuff keeps mine fairly protected from all the crap over the last few weeks, I havent cleaned mine in 3 weeks and it still comes up nice. But if your like I normally am, get some HG Gel cleaner, that stuff is awesome and really does a good job. Bitta Autosol on the Metal visible bits and we are away :D

I've been using washing up liquid and water for over a year (Fairy or Sainsburys own)- though I do rinse the bike as thoroughly as I clean it.

I have also started using muc-off motorcycle protector afterwards. Does a stunning job, that stuff does. The bike seems to stay clean- even in teh nasty weathers.

Though if it is that bad for the bike, I will use proper shampoo instead. Can't say my paintwork has particularly suffered, though.
