Photos of number plates

Why is it that when you see photos of cars/bikes, their number plates have often been doctored and characters are either covered or missing?

Never understood the reasoning.

Can someone please explain?

Thanks.

I think people are worried that having their plates on show makes it easier for criminals to either,

A) track down where they live and steal their pride and joy

or

B) clone their number plate for nefarious reasons

I have to say, we've never been bothered about our plate being on show. After all, it's just as easy to get someones plate when they're out and about as it is from some photo on a web site:rolleyes:

I do it for the cloning reason. If someone was looking to clone a plate then and obvious place to look is an online forum of that bike's make/model. Wouldn't take much searching through photo sections to find something if people didn't doctor them!

when i was a member on bandit maina and posted some pics of my bike, a few memebers told me to remove the number plate shots.? i asked why? thye said that thieves looked at these sites worked out where people lived and stole the best bikes!

How true that is i dont know.

The thing about cloning and keeping it covered online is, do you keep your plate covered when your out on the bike and park up?

of course not, but it's much much easier to just go online and search for SV650 photos than it is to walk around town until you happen to see a blue bike the same year as the one you want...

I don't give a monkey's if someone does clone my bike, it's easy enough to prove I wasn't speeding in Scotland when I have witnesses to say I was in Bedfordshire, and if they sell a bike with mine's ID I have the unmolested original with genuine paperwork (when the previous owner decides to send the effing V5 off to DVLA) to prove it, so no big deal.

Easy to prove that but it won't stop you getting the hassle of having to prove it. I agree, it's largely pointless but I do it out habit.

Besides, nowadays with nowt more than a 'bot script you can find an appropriate set of plates for any vehicle you want just by brute force spamming the DVLA Vehicle enquiry site, or the Transport for London congestion charge site, or any number of insurance sites.
