Anyone on here do homebrew?
 

I've done a couple of the types you get in tins but and was wondering if there are any others on here that like to have a go. What do you use? Any tips? I want to go one step further and try bottling some soon. I've plenty of bottles saved up, just need the tool and some caps.

I haven't done any brewing for a while, will kick in again one day.

It's got a lot of recipes, some more complicated to follow than others, but even the simple ones will give you a fantastic beer!

I used to do it when I was younger - seeing these threads is making me want to start again...

As a cheapo start kit - a 40 pint bucket - you can get these from a homebrew shop - only about a fiver. You need a beer kit - looks like a big tin of dogfood - you open it up, boil it with some sugar and add the supplied yeast. These range between 5-20 quid.

Leave it a week or 2 until it has stopped fermenting (you can use a hydrometer - only a few quid to check the specific gravity)

Then you either need to put it in a keg, or bottle it. I used pint bottles (glass), and bought a capper (about 8 quid I think).

If you want to be really professional you could even print off your own labels!!:o

I did bitters, stouts, but my favouritve was a german pilsner - ended up at about 5%, and generally cost less than a tenner for 40 pints.

Always gave me a rotten hangover tho...

Does it stink when fermenting? ie. could I do it in a corner of my room ;)

oh yes...it does have a certain aroma when it ferments in the bucket - mind you it has got a lid , but obviosly the gasses escape.

You really need somewhere warm to get the fermentation process going - I always used to put it in the spare room by a radiator - not too close mind!!

Failing that, you could put it somewhere out of the way, and buy a heated plate for the bucket to stand on - this keeps it at a certain temperature - but not really necessary in my opinion if you are doing it indoors, although might be necessary if you dont have central heating.

As Billy says, somewhere warm while its fermenting. but when you siphon it off for the secondary fermentation you need to move it somewhere cooler.
And don't put too much sugar into the bottles after fermentation. I did once, and every time I cracked open a bottle I'd lose half the beer as it came fizzing out!

And once you've got it bottled the beer does improve if you give it time to mature. I've still got some bottles left that were brewed over a year ago, and they go down very well. :drink:

Essentially thats all you need to get the brew going. The only essential piece of kit missing is something to store the beer in once its brewed. (pressure barrel or bottles) Personally I collect glass beer bottles and re-cap them, but the cheapest way to get started is to use old coke and lemonade bottles. so long as they've contained fizzy drinks they'll do the job.
