Elderly drivers
We have just witnessed a near miss between 2 of our neighbours. The guilty party being an elderly gentleman who is becoming increasing dangerous to the point we cringe when we see him behind the wheel.
How do you tell somebody it is about time they gave up their independence and mobility. He has difficulty walking and would not make it to the nearest bus stop. But, for the safety of all on the road, somebody is going to have to tell him. When my own father, had reached that point, we told him. But to the best of my knowledge this particular gentleman has no family. It should not be up to his neighbours to tell him to pack it in. |
Re: Elderly drivers
Slash his tyres? That ought to send a message...
Joking!! |
Re: Elderly drivers
Hide his keys, then see if his eyesight is good enough to find them ;)

He has already been told but forgot about it :-)

Re: Elderly drivers
I don't believe there is a process to be able to report bad drivers. But it may be an idea to contact the local police.

Re: Elderly drivers
Serious answer now...
I think no matter which way you choose to tell him, he's likely to be offended. No-one likes being told they're not good at / safe to do something, especially if he's been driving all his life. It happened with an old bloke that used to live across the road from us, we did try to have a quiet word but he didn't take it well. In the end, we noticed he had a social care worker coming round to see him every few days or so, and we had a quiet word with the carer instead. His car wasn't there a few days later. Could be an option if the gentleman in question has anyone who comes round on a regular basis to see him / do things for him. |
Re: Elderly drivers
nick the car!! Flog it and get him a mobility thing instead with the cash, everyone is a winner!!

Re: Elderly drivers
report him to the police, dangerous driving is the same thing if you're a dotty old git who just uses his car to drive to the shops once a week or a sales rep pulling 100k miles a year, if you let him carry on how will it feel when he kills a motorcyclist because of his incompetence? it's happened twice here in the last year, both times the dozy old driver never saw it coming...
but anyway, if you think you have a problem with old drivers you should try the isle of wight, dear god, i swear some of them have actually passed away whilst driving, such is the inattention to the road and lack of ability to pilot an automobile... |
