bike starts but wont stay running
thanks in advance for any help. ive got an 04 sv650s. i can get the bike to fire up, but it only runs for a few seconds at most, then dies. pulled the bike out of storage about 3 weeks ago, put in new fuel, oil, filter, the works. bike started up and rode for about 6 or 7 blocks, then died and hasn't stayed running since. checked the fuel filter and its good. have good battery, and spark. any ideas?
thanks again! |
Re: bike starts but wont stay running
Couple of basic questions for you.
1. how long in storage 2. what did you do to it prior to storage 3. it ran for a while then just died? did the engine just cut out/electrics still working ? would it turn over ok ? 4. will it start again after a period of time ? if so what do you have to do to it ? 5. was it running on both cylinders first off ? 6. you say "put in new fuel" did you flush the old out ? 7. you say " checked filter and is good" is this just a sight check or has it been blown out ? Cheers Mark. |
Re: bike starts but wont stay running
1. probably 4 or 5 months in storage
2. fresh oil and full tank of fuel with stabilizer before storage. ran fine when put up 3. ran fine, died. electronics all still working. bike would turn over but hasnt actually ran since. 4. nope. starts and dies after 2 or 3 seconds tops. 5. both cylinders firing 6. old fuel 100% flushed 7. filter blown out. have talked to a couple suzuki mechanics and so far are leading me to a fuel pressure regulator, throttle position sensor, or an idle speed control valve. |
Re: bike starts but wont stay running
Sounds like fuel pressure to me, can't really see how the TPS would have packed up and idle air speed you should be able to get around with the throttle.
However an easy test is the turn the engine over several times and then remove the rear (easiest to get to) plug, if it's wet and smell of petrol then you're getting pressure, if not then you have a fuel feed problem, if that turns out to be the case, also check the front one. Now I'm not sure about this but I'd have though you'd get an FI warning for a pressure related issue, but if both plugs are dry, check the system from the tank and the fuel tap for a blockage, trace down the system and you hopefully will find the cause. Cheers Mark. |
Re: bike starts but wont stay running
Really silly, simple suggestion, have you knocked the idle speed adjuster to "Too Bl00dy Slow"
I did and it took me ages to figure it out. |
Re: bike starts but wont stay running
I had that trouble on my VT250, the fuel had gone off and covered everything in a thin layer of brown stuff, a flake of this brown stuff had came off and blocked my fuel system.
