Well I have acquired a CCTV camera (all weather proof wireless one). I want to set it up outside the house watching the garage. It's probabily crap quality but it might have some use?!

Are there any rules/regulations that I need to follow in terms of peoples privacy etc?

I don't have a real need for the camera apart from a new toy and to watch over the two bikes (mine and my Dads).

If anyone knows much about this sort of thing then I would very much like to hear from you.

Yes IIRC you need a sign up saying CCTV in operation.

Visual security like that advertises you have something precious, I wouldnt bother and would be more inclined to add security internal to the garage.

You dont NEED CCTV in operation signage, but I dont thing you could use it in court as evidence in a prosecution if you dont....the police could still use it to identify someone and get your stuff back though.

With privacy and camera's providing the camera is not electronicaly movable and does not record any neighbouring property then its ok.

You cannot look at or onto a neighbours private property, only your own and public areas.

If you have wifi you may find they interfere with each other, assuming the camera is using the legal 2.4Ghz band. Also, being wireless, anyone nearby can view the pictures from it if so inclined.

Dont worry about signage, no-one does.

Re: Signage, IIRC, you need at least 3 cameras and/or to be able to remote control it (IE not fixed position) and/or for it to significantly cover public/neighbour's property in order to have to have signage up.

Sorry, but under the data protection act, I believe that you do. Also, it may be worth making sure that you don't look into anyone else's garden, house, private area (so to speak). If your neighbours ask to view what your camera can see, you are obliged by law to provide a still or video if they ask for it.

you could put the camera in the garage so it get a pic of who ever opens it, then no need to worry about the camera being on display and no need to put up signs as the camera is inside.
