If you get a 2 door pick-up then the load bed is long enough to take a bike. If you get a crew-cab (4 door) then you would need to drop the tail gate. You can get a tail gate fence that sets up a perimeter on the tail gate, making it safe to carry a load with the tail gate down.

You will need to check the load rating of the tail gate for carrying a load while down.

The man's right there. My SV has been in a 2-door pickup no problems. We even lifted it from the ground into the back of the pickup by hand (only me & the driver there) when it "broke down".

I then sat on the bike, holding the brakes and feet on the wheel arches for balance whilst he drove me home (was only along a small countryside single track road, so no risk of plod etc).

Don't get an L200 if you can avoid it, they are gutless, slow and noisy. The driving position is pretty crap to. If you can run to it, a mark II Navarra is WAY better. I have not tried the new L200 though, none of the farmers here will touch em as the towing rating is too low.

Pick-ups are really expensive to run BTW - would a van not be better?

I'll try to find one of the pick load bed fence things....

Saw a guy at Mallory on Wednesday with a brand spanking new R6 track bike on the back of a TATA pickup tailgate was up as well

Cheers Baph - I don't think I could live with just the front seats though, double cab is way more practical. I reckon it would also get used for trips to the Alps to go 'boarding from time to time, too so having seats for 4 would be the ideal.

Thinking on it, perhaps a bike will fit in diagonally? Front wheel turned into left front corner? Then strapped onto the side stand? might be tight.

Decent car and bike trailer might be better though?

I love pick-ups but so far have not been able to justify getting one, no matter how hard I try!

I got my CBR in the back of a Volvo 245 Estate no problems. Does that help?

Not much love in here for the toyota hilux?

they are more than a match for a l200 or navara and more reliable than a wood burning stove, plus old ones which are a bit battered are officially cool since topgear tried (in vain) to kill one!

Sorely tempted myself actually...
