Farrrk Snapped Exhaust Header Stud Bolt
 

Well it was all going well till it came to undo the nuts for the down pipes. Nut had welded itself to stud and that was the result :mad:

You know what's coming next don't you :lol:. Soooo my good folks, what's the best course of action now....apart from taking the angle grinder to the it :o :p ;).

I'd heat the area around the stud and try and get it out that way with a stud extractor... I have a decent set of snap on ones that always do the trick.
If not then how bout just drill and tap.. I've got plenty of taps you can borrow.

I had this problem last year. Tried loads of things. In the end a mate made up a block of metal which fitted over the exhaust port so that the one good bolt could be put in to hold the metal block in place. The block was then used as a guide for the drill, to drill out the old stud. Then a thread tapper was used to get out the last remaining bits of metal, to get back to the original threads.

I got the last one out with one of these - Stud extractor.

Though I had to take the header pipes off to give me room to move. It worked like a charm though as Rictus will tell you as he advised me about the exhaust bolt I forgot to remove.

Morning all.

If you have access to a welder, weld a bigger nut over the stud, not only does the heat help loosen the beggar, you will then also have something to turn.

If you can't access a welder, & stud extractors don't work. It's drill out time I'm afraid.

Thanks to those who have replied.

I guess Its' one of those things where you know the various options are but just so ****ed off that you are almost hoping for some quick magical solution haha .

No access to welder or heat but hoping to be luckier and keep away from drilling. Going to be loads of plusgas and a stud extractor and see how it goes.

Re stud extractor, of the three diffferent types below(third is the one Grich posted above), any recommendations ? Might as well add to the tool collection eh :p :)

I've not used the other ones, but after using some freeze spray and the stud extractor I used it came out easy as pie. Removing the header pipe to work was the hardest bit.

Hopefully, that's the case here too.....mine is stuck in solid too but I have a big hammer hehe. We'll see how it goes
