Ride out oop north

Does anyone know the name of a pass that runs across from barnard castle area towards the lake district, I have been told by an acquaintance that it,s a great run but unfortunately the night we were discussing it I had one too many of the amber nectar, I was told it,s a great road it runs somewhere from east to west just above A66, was intending doing a day out taking in this pass going through alston into lake district through windermere (across lake on ferry and then back to squires (of course) for a frothy coffe at end of day.

Theres a good run out of Barnard Castle which takes you past the castle and over the bridge, then up to Cotherstone and follow the road up towards Alston

Are you not thinking of Buttertubs Pass? Thats south of the A66, starts between Richmond & Leyburn. If you're heading up from Wakey, best way is to ride to Skipton, up through into Kettlewell and towards Ayrsgarth, turn right towards Leyburn and once at Leyburn head up towards Richmond. Half way along that road there'll be signs for Reeth. Head over that way towards Kirkby Stephen, the road is fantastic, very tight in places but a great road.

Those are might fine roads Rob has suggested.

Also, if you head out of Barney towards Middleton in Teesdale, and turn off just after Romaldkirk towards Brough, that is a good road also, joins up at the A66 at Brough, but you can also head off towards Kirby Stephen along the A685.

If your going along the A66 to brough keep going for a bit till you get to penrith . From there you can take the legendary Hartside pass to Alston . This is the twistiest of all roads to and from Alston and is an Absolute biking heaven . At Alston you can then go on to Barnard Castle via Middleton-in Teesdale . Trust me , you will not be disappointed .
Alternatively you can do the route in reverse setting out from Barny , but I think its a better ride doing it from Penrith . I don't know why I just do .

tis cos most people dont like downhill twisties, and you doing it from the penrith side means your on the power all the way up the twisties.

me i likes it both ways :p *insert inuendo's here*

go your route up from middleton in teesdale to alston then left for hartside cafe then twisties down all the way to penrith over eamont bridge right turn to pooley bridge and round ullswater over kirkstone pass turn down the struggle to ambleside then head for coniston lake for a look and a coffee then head back via ferry over windemere and head across to kendal then a65 to devils then continue back over towards leeds, one hell of a run and some of the best biking roads in the country.

hope you enjoy :)

all sounds very good, I am waiting for weather reports for this sunday, hopefully doing it then. How are those roads for speed traps, boys in blue etc ?

On the Penrith to Hartside/Alston road there is one about a mile or so from penrith and I am told there is another closer to Alston , although I have only seen the one at Penrith .
I wouldn't worry too much about the mystery camera near Alston coz' if your going along those roads fast enough to set it off , then you are a biking god my friend .
As for my suggested route thats it . However I cannot inform you of any on the other routes suggested .

on alston to cafe possible scamera van occasionally but very rare.

cafe to penrith again possibly a scamera van at melmerby or just outside the village.

round lake and over kirkstone ive never seen a poilceman but with all the tourists and the road you wont be speeding.

kirkstone never seen anything or indeed down to coniston.

from windemere to kendal fixed 40 at ings well marked and possible unmarked car occasionally.

a65 lots of bobbies (its devils bridge road) and recently they have been seen in silver scooby and blue scooby and more recently unmarked golf gti's silver ones.

most of the roads you are doing you will enjoy at the 60 to 70 mph anyway, so don't fuss to much.

Thanks again, only bit I dont fancy is the A65 towards Gargrave, it,s always full of dreamers, caravanners, trucks etc almost impossible to make any decent sort of progress
