Wiltshire area visitor attractions??? Help
HI, I'm popping down to Marlborough for a couple of nights tomorrow then up to the lakes for a couple of days with my fiancee and another couple,
She's desperate to go to longleat safari park, also thought about doing the cheddar caves and Stonehenge, are these worth it or is there somewhere else that is a must see since we're that far south:wink: Reckoned a day for longleat then cheddar and stonehenge the next day, or possibly stonehenge in the evening after longleat??? Any opinions options welcome. Also good, inexpensive restaurant in marlborough?? |
Re: Wiltshire area visitor attractions??? Help
Longleat then stonehenge would be do-able! Might have to start out fairly early on the day but it's possible =)

if you're in marlborough, take the A4 to avebury (silbury hill and avebury standing stones) and stop at the red lion, thats always a good ride, then maybe down to Devizes as the canal runs along there.
alternatively you could go down towards salisbury and catch the A303 - stonehenge is there. Been on a rideout that way this afternoon and passed all that. |

ahh restaurant in marlborough - didn't see that question - at the town hall end of the high street is an Italian by the bear hotel (i think thats what it's called), always seems busy, try that one.

Stonehenge will only take you an hour or so, theres nothing there but Stonehenge to look at.
If you're going to Cheddar Gorge / Caves then also take a trip to Wookey hole whilst you're at it. I prefered Wookey hole as it seemed less mucked about with a bit more unspoiled. You can do both in a day. |
Re: Wiltshire area visitor attractions??? Help
Wookey hole less messed about with??? I'm not so keen on the plastic dinosaurs ;) I preferred Cheddar to Wookey Hole - wookey hole is geared up for kids IMO.
In Marlborough there is a nice Thai called the Blue orchid on the alleyway behind the town hall at the end of the highstreet. There is also a bar/bistro that looks nice (but i've never been) up the hill from the town hall. I've heard good things about the indian near the thai too. There are plenty of pubs along the highstreet for standard pub grub. Avebury is worth it for a wander round the stones, and is very close to marlborough. There is a bike meet there on Wednesday night with a BBQ. There is not much in Swindon - nice pub called the Brewers Arms in Wanborough that I usually take friends to when they visit. Its a good ride out through lechlade to Burford which is an old cotswold town. Out in that direction is bourton on the water which has a good motoring museum, with a really interesting collection of old british motoring bits. |
Re: Wiltshire area visitor attractions??? Help
It was when I went ages ago. No plastic dinosaurs then, but its been a while since I went last.
Wookey Hole was just caves with lighting and guide to show you round and explain stuff. Whereas Cheddar Caves are all cemented over on the ground and it felt less natural and I never really got the feeling of benig deep underground like I did when I was in Wookey Hole. |

Re: Wiltshire area visitor attractions??? Help
thanks for all the info, unfortunately was at the lakes on the wed night so couldn't make the meet. There was some kind of scooter meet in Marlborough high st on the Tuesday night but they wern't too friendly. Did manage a blether with 4 Austrian bikers over on tour 3 gs's and a ktm.
Longleat was good as expected, wookey hole? Cave was good rest was terrible comercialised child orientated tat. so $16 for a 30 Min cave walk was a bit steep but u live and learn. Stonehenge as described, circle of stones, not anywhere as big as i'd expected or it looks on the tv. Day at the lakes was a wash out, lashing down so up the road early. thanks again for all the advice, sorry I didn't get to meet any of you.:thumleft: |
