Got the new shock in... tips?
 
Have got a ZX10R shock installed on my curvey now and loving it already! I set up the preload first before doing anything (managed 30mm rider sag with 15mm static sag). When I first set off up the road I had it wayyy too soft and it was like a pogo stick, had to turn around straight away and come back in to adjust. I put it to the middle setting on both compression and rebound to give me something to work on. It was "okay" but was sagging at the back under acceleration, worse than the stock shock even! Managed to get a bit of waggle from the bars under acceleration which I'd never had before. After a 20mile ride I came back home and gave my compression one more full turn (has 7 turns of adjustment in total) towards being hard and went back out.
It was like night and day, so much nicer and much better than the stock shock :cool: . This is how I have left it at the moment.

Now I need some tips on fine tuning it. It's good now, but still has a bit of "chatter" after going over a bump where it continues to bounce for a few seconds (like the stock shock was, but not as bad). Do I need to add more compression to stop this or is it a rebound problem? I still have the rebound set to the middle setting (2.5 turns out of 5 I think it is) and I'm not quite sure whether I would need more or less to sort this.

I've got a small 10 mile route close to my house with a good mix of 30 zones, smooth A roads and twisty B-roads which I'll ride over and over to get it right while making changes. I'll be taking my screwdriver and doing it gradually to get a feel for it, but I don't really know what to start doing yet.

As a side note, I've also got new progressive Hagon springs in my front forks with 10w oil in and after using a cable tie to check it's not bottoming out I've found it's pretty much perfect now for me with 10mm travel left after riding on all sorts of roads! :) . Feels much firmer than before and I can brake much more confidently because it doesn't dive forward so much. Also stopped "banging" going over bumps which I'm guessing was it bottoming out.

You want a tip ... take the ruddy screwdriver out with you!! :lol:

As for damping, if you increase compression damping significantly, then you will normally need to increase rebound too ... the chatter is prolly caused by to LITTLE rebound ... I'd try 1/2 turn more rebound and see how you get on :)
