Decent Insurance quote at long last...

...I was fairly pleased with the quote from my existing insurer: £260 TPFT including class 1 business use, legal cover, european cover, etc. I was however, fairly annoyed to find what a minute difference having done IAM made, particularly when (if you believe IAM's stats/propoganda) you are more than 4 times less likely to have an "at fault" accident. I was pleasently surprised when getting a quote from IAM's approved insurer, Surety, to find I was not only covered for all the existing things, but also IAM observations (which I believe can be tricky to get and often has to be arranged seperately), for only £168. Even more startling was fully comp was now within my grasp (previously it had been best part of £1K, for a bike worth less than £2K, lol!) at only £332. Given the age/value of my bike, I think I'll still go TPFT as the FC doesn't include lid/leathers or private medical care, etc., but it's nice to know the option is there.

I'm 26, not great area, but not terrible either, bike is garaged, immobiliser and ground anchor. IAM, 6 points for speeding at over a ton, 4 years NCB, no at fault claims ever, all mods (including suspension) declared.

Other IAM members, it's certainly worth getting a quote from them.

MCE have been most competative for me the last couple of years...

But glad you found a company that viewed you in a good light :)

Do you have any idea what your quote would have been, minus IAM certification, with Surety? I can't tell from what you've said whether they were just a better insurer, or if it was down to the IAM...

For obvious reasons, I didn't get a quote w/o IAM certification, but according to the IAM leaflet about them I got in the post last year (just after renewals as it happened! :(), IAM partnered with them specificially to get extremely favourable rates for full IAM members to address the fact many insurers were only giving 5% off (which many IAM members griped about), if that for having done IAM. They reckon that with IAM, particularly for younger/less experienced riders, there will be much cheaper quotes.

I've not heard anything to suggest they would be a cheap insurer for non-IAM members, if anything, the fact I'd not heard of them until the thing from the IAM suggests to me they are likely to not be especially competitive.

edit: I believe they were so much cheaper (on what was already a good quote) because of the IAM membership- my complaint was based on my existing insurer not giving much of a discount for having done it.

Hmmm...makes me tempted to look into the (bike) IAM. My dad's an instructor with the local car IAM and I did start that at one point, but gave up when I realised the full effect of having to lose my Sunday mornings
