SV650S Trying to start - advise please?
Hi,
My 2000 SV650S which I have been riding into work on a daily basis today did not start. It was trying to turn over, but just wouldn't start. I've only been riding for around 10 months and this is my first bike so I'm not very experienced......any suggestions on what the problem could be? I suspect perhaps it needs new spark plugs? Thanks in advance, G |
Re: SV650S Trying to start - advise please?
what was happening when you tried to start it? (i doubt its the plugs)
was it turning over? completely dead? clicking sound? did you get ignition lights? |
Re: SV650S Trying to start - advise please?
you need the following for the engine to run:
fuel - compression - spark work out which one/s you don't have and then work out why you're not getting it... to test the spark plug take it out of the hole and rest the ground electrode on the engine casing - DON'T TOUCH IT WHILE YOU CRANK THE ENGINE - and see if it's sparking |
Re: SV650S Trying to start - advise please?
Try not to buy anything until you are certain what the problem is, this way saves you buying stuff you don't need.
Lets start with the basics: It's turning over properly as in you can hear the starter motor churning the engine over, but it's not catching right? Can you hear any any coughing, like it's trying to start Is there definitely fuel in it? I'd suspect water's got in somewhere to the electrics, but I could be completely wrong :) Jambo |

edit: by fuel i mean fuel reaching the engine, just because there's fuel in the tank doesn;t mean it's getting to the chamber after turning it over can you smell petrol in the air or around the end of the exhaust? |
Re: SV650S Trying to start - advise please?
Is the front spark plug and /or cap wet?! Mine got wet after riding in the rain and the bike ran horrible until i dried it out.
The bike could also be flooded? Too much petrol in the carbs. |

Was the engine trying to turn over but slowly started to die, if so charge the battery. The spark plugs themselves I wouldn't have thought would be the problem assuming the bike was has been serviced in the past 10 months? Water in the front plug is common, as mentioned above, but that would make it run on one cylinder so it should still at least start. |
Re: SV650S Trying to start - advise please?
Were you out in the recent heavy rain?If so I suggest that water has something to do with it and you should dry out the leccy bits(front plug especially)and consider if you could have got water in the fuel.Does the drain pipe from the filler area still work properly?
Also charge the battery.Even if you think it is fine, turning the engine ok,you need plenty of welly in it to start these bikes. What happens is the starter motor draws all the battery power leaving not enough to deliver sparks if the battery isnt tip top. This problem gets compounded if there is damp or in cold weather. |
