Front end damage advice
 

Unfortunately I did a bit of ditch jumping in scotland today and as a result I appear to have done some severe damage to my front end (forks/yokes) and was after some advice on the best fixes, whether I should go all standard, or look at GSXR conversion (and if so, how on earth you do it etc). Can anyone offer some advice?

Please someone help me! I'm stuck in edinburgh, I live in Derby, I have a bike left at the local suzuki dealers and I need some way to sort it out :( Dropped it off at 8pm and the guy who'd stayed late to take it in looked at it and pulled the figure of £1500 out of the air for full fix back to standard. There must be a cheaper way to do this!

I'd ;put an appeal on the wanted section of this forum. There's a few here who've done GSXR conversions and have a good front end left over.

I got a set of SRAD600 forks, bottom yoke and spindle for 40 quid. Far superior stuff.

How hard would it be to make the SRAD forks fit? different wheel needed? and to make all the ancillaries etc work with them. what kind of condition are they in? are they suitable for the sv? obviously much older forks . . . Sorry for so many questions i'm just a bit clueless on all of this and need as much info as possible asap!

SRad was up to 2000 IIRC so not much older... you need whole SRAD front end to make it easy, wheel, discs, calipers (4 pot :-D), yokes, mudguard and a new top bearing from TWF.

This is about curvys, pointies are easier because you use same bearings, but later GSXR parts.

I've a spare set of curvy forks and pretty sure theres top and bottom yokes somewhere also-Near Glasgow -pm me if interested-if bike is rideable you could use my garage to do swap over

It's a pointy, k6 I think (2006 year) so I don't know if that would mean the curvey forks wouldn't fit? Or the SRAD ones?

And although I didn't try I'm pretty sure it's unrideable, forks are fairly ****ed and can't get full lock for turning left cause the brake lever catches the fairing, making it pretty unmanouverable!

Most important is to assess exactly what is damaged. The lock stops on the frame for instance may be damaged. The forks are clearly damaged, but that won't explain the brake lever issue. It's important to assess each part carefully.

For a full GSXR front-end conversion you will need:
Wheel
Front Axel
Top Yoke
Bottom Yoke
Brake calipers
Brake lines
Clip-ons (replacement bars)
Speedo pickup
Front Brake discs
Front Mudguard

Potentially needed consumables:
Front brake pads (assuming the discs and calipers are from different bikes).
Front brake caliper seal kit (if calipers require re-build)
Front Tyre (120/70 R17)
Head race bearings
Front wheel bearings
Front fork oil / service

As you can see, none of this is beyond reason, but it all adds up, most of the people that have broken even on a GSXR conversion have been very careful about buying parts over time when they came up at the right price. If you want the bike back on the road right now, you need pretty much the whole lot above to come up in good condition, undamaged for a good price. You will be buying parts of unknown history so forks and brake calipers should be serviced.

Faced with that list, it's important to know what's wrong with your bike in some detail. If it's just the forks damaged, you can just pay to replace them, and look at a GSXR or similar front end in your own time.
