best way to remove carbs?
Right I've took the tank and airbox off and can see the carbs. The SV's a lot different to anything I've ever worked on before so has anyone anytips - it's a '99 650x curvster. I just need to fit the restrictor washers and give them a good clean out I suppose. Also gotta change the sparkplugs - do I need to remove/move the radiator for one of them?
Oh an does that little extra box on the airbox open up to be cleaned? I take it it's somesort of drip filter? Any help; as always muchly appreciated! Cheers |
Re: best way to remove carbs?
Get a long screwdriver to loosen the clamps on the carbs, it's loads easier that way than fiddling with shorter ones, then take care and don't rush or you'll break things.
Loosening radiator will suffice on front spark plug, then swing it forwards. You may then need a chock of wood to hold it forwads while using the plug remover in stock toolkit. (This has been covered a fair few times though, so be prepared for some jip about using the search function) |

Remove horn, makes it far easier to get rad far enough forward to get to front plug.
The catch can under the airbox can be left alone. Don't need to disconnect anything from the carbs, just lift them far enough off their rubbers to get the washers seated under them. Unless of course you want to get the float bowls off to clean them out, in that case prepare for a fight with the front choke plunger screw. I would advice to get an impact driver and some GT85 penetrant oil to get carbs in bits, then replace everything with stainless and plenty copperslip, mainly M5 - M6 allen heads you'll want. Also get a can of spray grease with tube on the nozzle, and pack the splitter for the choke cables with grease. |

16mm head iirc, half inch drive one and a 3" extension bar does the trick. Remove horn to get radiator far enough forward.

If you can find an SV plug spanner, there's no better tool for the front cylinder, it looks like a bit of rubbish bent tin but it's ace.
