Traction control - any point?
 

Traction control (TC) on bikes seems to be getting raved about at the moment (well not so long ago anyway) so im wondering if anyone on here has had a major moment when TC would have really made a difference.

Ive put a pole asking if you would benefit from it.

My exp.

Ive had 4 occations with the Falco where the rear has spun up. 2 of those were going onto the motorway in the wet. The other two were just roling on in high gears on crappy road surfaces in the wet. would TC have helped... not really, nothing really happened, just lots of revs and little acceleration.

Yes and as per Motogp,the more powerful the bike the more essential it becomes.

would it greatly reduce the possibility of high siding as the rear wouldnt spin up? If so then yes I want it lol

The was an article in PB about ABS on the new 600RR as honda have dedicated themselves to have all there bikes running it by 2010.....the bikes stopped quicker than highly experience rider, the experience riders only came close after 6 attempts

Am I right in that traction control works by sensing that the rear wheel is spinning so starts to pulsate power to the wheel so that it gives it chance to grip again? If so I'm thinking it would be of great use in slippy surfaces in the wet in the case of road bikes. I'm all for swichable ABS for the same reasons. Maltese roads are just too slippery in the wet as they don't have too much shell grit in them so we need all the help we can get. My friends that have ABS equiped bikes can't praise the system enough.

Again if it was an option I'd have it. I'm 100% happy with riding my bike in any weather but exactly the same as with ABS I'd have it for when I'm not 100% on it. Would have to be switchable though.

I'm not so sure about traction control, ABS's killer advantage is that it can save you in an emergency, but traction control doesn't really have such a dramatic effect. It seems to me to be mainly a tool for going faster, rather than going safer. Not that I'd hate to have it, but it's going to cost money I'd sooner have spent on something else at the end of the day.

Yes, I'm fully aware these are all the same oppositions that people make to ABS :D

Hmmm, I've had a bike go very sideways very quickly while dead upright and I've very nearly highsided my VFR. Both were saved but probably more though luck than judgement. Neither time was I going that fast and both were tbh mostly user error...

Yes - why not! Though I think it is an interesting one. I think you have to recondition your riding to get the most from it. How many riders used to non-TC bikes would feel comfortable opening the throttle loads mid/exit corner when we have been taught that will cause the rear to slide or bike to run wide?

I'm not adverse to it, but I don't think many people would get that much out of it for a while
