Cars to have headlights always on
So I see the EU want to force cars to have headlights on at all times as well now, is it just me or is this a bad thing?
I didn't mind if for bikes as we tend to have them always on anyway but surely this will just drown us out, and why the hell do cages need cars on in the middle of the day anyway??? especially with the number of badly adjusted halogen idiots out there on full beam all the time 0_O. |
Re: Cars to have headlights always on
I think it's going to be a bad move, we will have to adopt new forms of defensive riding, such as moving across the lane when approching a car emerging from a junction to get seen. The small additional benefit has got to be outweighed by the detriment to PTW's and peddle cyclists.
This new EU directive will only escalate the bright light "arms race", to the point where dark visors and tinted glasses will be needed at night. |

Can't see what the benefit really is for them. |
Re: Cars to have headlights always on
MCN said few weeks back that the Gov are not going to bother doing this now. luckily. we would have to lobby for stupid coloured lights to stand out.

Re: Cars to have headlights always on
It's very old news, and it won't happen.
It only has relevance in Scandinavian countries that have almost total darkness for months of the year. In the UK, and any country further south, it has no benefit. DRL (Daylight Running Lights) can reduce the visibility of multiple vehicles in daylight hours, and reduce the visibility of comparatively infrequent motorcyclists (that usually have DRL). Most of all, lights usually eat into fuel consumption by about 10%, and fuel costs are clearly high on all EU countries agendas. |
Re: Cars to have headlights always on
I know in Italy and Austria you should have your lights on all the time too...in some cars out there it's a default setting now and you just can't switch them off. For me I'd be happy if they'd just make sure that drivers switch their lights on when they should because I'm fed up driving/riding around when it's getting dark and/or really dull day and seeing folk with no lights on!

I'd rather do everything I can to avoid a smash. I assume I can't be seen anyhow, so I don't really see how cars having their lights on will affect me. Afterall, I ride at night as well as daytime, and then everyone has their lights on, and half of them are fast asleep! |
