Headlight electrics - only one light works

My SK3 has been suffering from an intermittent headlight problem, but I have the problem more times than not. The nearside headlight has both filaments dimly lit the whole time (except when you depress the pass switch in which case neither filament is lit), with the side effect that the high-beam telltale glows. The offside light is unaffected and it is not a faulty bulb.

The picture give an indication, but the nearside is probably a bit brighter in real life.

As only one side is affected I assume the problem must be a short/broken wire after the loom splits for the two lights (or are they wired in series?). I have visually checked the loom and cannot see any obvious problems.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to likely trouble spots for this kind of problem?

When you press the Pass switch, the lights are supposed to get brighter, not turn off!! This would be my first port of call, and it's probably a dodgy ground.

Haven't got the wiring diagrams with me at the moment unfortunately.

Correct - the earth bundle behind the clocks was all scorched. Hook up a new earth and job-jobbed. Until the fried green connector struck, and that needed bypassing too.
