Camera Advice (DSLRs)

Right - I know quite a few of you guys are into photography and I'm after a new DSLR.
I haven't used my 35mm SLRs for years! Did a Photography GCSE at College, so have a reasonable knowledge of photography and enjoy playing with photography once I get started!
With my upcoming visit down-under for my Honeymoon, I'd like to take some decent pics... With the amount we're spending on such a special holiday, I want some properly decent pics that my poor old compact won't be capable of producing.

I don't have a huge amount to spend (what with having no job at present!) but should be able to stretch to a Canon EOS450D or Nikon D60 - both with their kit lenses...

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions!?

I have the D60, love it to bits, you just can't beat the feel of a Nikon! Then again, the Canon is just as good, I've just always had Nikons. Go play, touch, feel the cameras, then buy the one you can get the best deal on off t'internet!

Cool - I've got a friend who's got 2 Nikon bodies - a D70 and something else (can't remember) and I did like those.
I'm quite lucky in that fairly local to me are Park Cameras who are a bit competitive on price, to say the least! Their prices are generally about the same as you can find online!! :D

Hi Tim, (Oh and congrats) both the bodies are well capable the Nikon is bigger and more chunky and the cannon lighter, but it really is horses for course, the kit lens on both are fairly versatile so you should be fine for most things there.

I got into it last year and being on a fixed budget and not worried about either brand ended up getting a new 350d from cannon outlet for £192 which allowed me to get a couple of extra lense, battery grip and external flash at the same time, not the leading edge of course but I'm ore than happy with the performace.

Cheers Mark.

What 35mm camera do you have. It may be worth looking to see if any of the lenses you already own will work with the new camera.... a way of saving some money if you do have some good glass already...

I use Canon and always will, you can't go wrong with the 450D and stock lens...

Some of my fave pics have come from the stock lens :)

Like Rictus says, both are very capable cameras and I'm sure that you'd be delighted with either. I spent ages debating between Canon and Nikon and, after reading loads of reviews, eventually went for the Nikon D50.

www.dpreview.com has the most in-depth camera reviews, which are definitely worth reading before deciding. But to be honest, you really couldn't go wrong with either the Canon or the Nikon.

Well - I got myself my new toy!
Thanks to the world-renowned Bank Of Mum (she lent me the money so I could get it before I go on honeymoon in a couple of weeks), I am now the proud owner of a Canon EOS450D with 18-55mm 'kit' lens - and a Tamron 70-300 lens... All for £530 - with a 4GB SDHC card and a mid-sized camera bag included too!
After looking around, I found that Jessops were the best bet at the minute as their deal including the Tamron lens, memory card and bag seemed unbeatable! (Most others were a little cheaper than that for just the camera and kit lens!!)
Was a bit of a nightmare getting it (long story!) but I am well chuffed!
Can't wait to take some decent pics of New Zealand... Particularly looking forward to the Whale Watching and the 300mm lens!!:D
