Which GSXR shock (again.....)

Sorry to go through this again, I've looked at old posts and have seen the table thats been produced.

I know the K5 GSXR shock is what is normally used, possibly because the spring rate is the highest. But I've had a bit of a look around and am unsure if the 600 or 750 ones would be better.

Basically

600: 7.6kg/mm
750: 7.3kg/mm
1000: 8.1kg/m

SV650: 7.0kg/mm.

The SV figure comes from Hagon, who also use a 7.0kg/mm spring on their aftermarket shocks as apparently it works the best.

As the racetech calculator doesn't do the SV650 you cant use it with your weight to get an 'ideal rate', but the figures that come out with the GSXRs vary between the 600/750 and 1000, presumably due to the the swing arm length, linkage ratio and bike weight, so which is more similar to the sv?

Not just the spring rate thats the difference though....

I've also been told that "the GSXR1000K5 shock is far too oversprung for the SV and also is too harsh on the rebound damping for the bike", and that the valving is lighter on the 750/600 shocks which would be more suited.

Physically the cylinder is a different shape / size / angle on the 1000 vs 600/750, which is easier to fit?

I'm about 13.5 stone, often take a pillion of about 10 stone, and have a K4 pointy.

Ironically, I probably wont be able to tell the difference, but would like to take the better option!

I have the K4 Thou shock and find it is spot on , especially with a pillion . I think your getting a bit over technical on the aspects between the Thou and the Six/Seven . The GSXR shock is the best thing I ever did to my SV :D

I have the K5 thou shock on mine and whilst it is rock hard, it's exactly how I like it. A suspension guru can set it up for your weight and style of riding. The K4/5 600/750 shock (no difference between the 2 as both bikes are the same apart from engine bore and internals) is also a good bet for your weight but may not be up to the job once you get the pillion on it.

All in all, I doubt you'll go far wrong with either and once set up, both will improve the rear end massively. Only problem with them is it'll highlight how $hit the standard front end is!!

He might be better with a K4 shock as mine doesn`t seem that hard , I agree that it shows up the front end , that`s my next change in the new year , Maxton or Hyperpro spring and oil kits .

One good thing about the GSXR shocks is that they dont have stepped preload rings - so you can be more precise in setting the static sag for your weight....

...As said already, I think you will notice an improvement from any GSXR shock you put in - why not buy the cheapest good condition / low mileage one you see on ebay and see - swapping a shock takes half an hour, and if you aren't happy you can always put to original back in, and resell it.

BB.

whats the average price for a used gsxr shock? From what I've seen, a new nitron shock is about 300 quid... but you get the warranty, the setup by the pro's who made it and you know it's box fresh and designed purely for the bike intended. But if a gsxr shock will do a very similar job for say half the cost of a brand new item, I'd be proper tempted :)

Not meaning to Hijack but hopefully someone can give me a quick answer. What GSXR shock will fit a 2002 curvy?
