Oil Concerns - think there is a problem?

hi,

I last filled my engine/gear oil about 2 months ago (couldnt find the thread with my pics of me syringing it out after as i over filled - so not sure exactly how long)...

but about 2 months i think

and its empty again when i looked this morning....hard to get into neutral etc and the usual badness that goes with having no oil...

as i filled it up 2 months ago surely it shouldnt be empty 2 months on?

I can find no evidence of a leak, on the bike itself or where it is parked overnight?

any thoughts?

Were you checking it with the bike upright? The sightglass shows nothing when it's on the sidestand.

How many miles? You should be checking your oil weekly at least. Bike burning some oil off is not really disastrous.

yea bike was upright (made that mistake when filled it up!)

yc thinking about it i have done a lot more miles than i usually do, not sure exactly but about 2.5k since i filled up...

thats alright then, just wanted the peice of mind

Cheers

ermmmm .. your bike shouldn't go threw a sump of oil in 2.5k.. if it is then there is something really wrong. sounds like the bore or the valve stem seals have gone.

Not neccasarily, mines will go down to half in 1000 miles if I'm caning it.

YESSSSSSSSS..lol

Tiz why I now have engine under the stairs and bikedolf in mine(well it solved that particular prob)
Check your oil......saves expensive purchases

Have you looked to see if you have a leak from one of the clutch cover bolts? Main ones being the bottom ones. On a curvy thats one to look for

Dave looses oil out of those..haven't got round to fixing that yet, but i keep a constant eye on it. I know that on the Ecosse I topped it up twice in about 700 miles, 200ml each time. Its not a massive leak, and only does it when running, doesn't do it stood unused in the shed

If its not been checked for 2.5k, and its gone un-noticed, might be worth a look

p.s I overfilled Dave once, which is why the clutch bolts leak now

Not a problem as long as you check and top up often.
It only has to fall below the critical level once and your engine is history.
Sounds like you got away with it this time.
