Generator cover replacement advice please.
Help required please guys. Just before I start spannering I need to know weather removing the generator cover is a straight forward job to replace and will I need to drain off the nice new oil I have just put in it? The reason I need to replace it is because the bellypan attachment has obviously been kicked or bashed at some point and there is a crack which is leaking a bit of oil where one of the mounting bolts goes. Dont get me wrong its not too bad but i keep getting annoying whiffs of hot oil and shes just not quite perfect.
Thanks in advance guys and gals. |
Re: Generator cover replacement advice please.
You will have to drain the oil. The coils for the geny are also inside the cover. The magnet is on the crank
Here's a photo of what's behind the cover. It's not a hard job, although the screws holding the coils to the cover might need some encouragement to budge. http://www.sv650.org/gallery/pic40/IMG_0325.JPG |

Re: Generator cover replacement advice please.
You can lean bike against wall or something to save draining the oil.

I put mine on ababa stand and then lifted the left side up a bit, a little oil dribbled down, but it was all fine.
The only problem I had was one of the bolts sheered, but the others where enough that I didn't need to drill it out. |

One good thing about taking all of the engine bolts out to polish is that you can put some coppaslip on them when you screw them back in ;)

Re: Generator cover replacement advice please.
You need a new gasket, it's a paper one so it rips up. It can be a complete sod to remove the leftover gasket too :smt076Not difficult, just time consuming and frustrating. Oh, and when you take it off it'll bring the generator coils with it so you'll need to swap those over (or probably there's one attached to your cover? But personally I'd keep the old one, you know it works)
Oh yeah, and the oil loss is minimal even on the sidestand. |
