First Chain & Sprocket Change - Two Question!
Situation:
Both sprockets are successfully off the bike, but the chain is still on. Questions: 1 - What is the easiest way to get an OEM chain off? (Baring in mind I don't have a disc cutter or a swing-arm removal tool, but do have a chain splitter tool that I've not used before!) 2 - The new front sprocket (JT) to replace the OEM one is thinner and doesn't have the spacers attached on either side - is this fine to put straight on? Or do I somehow have to get the spacers off the original and put them around the new one? (not sure how? as looks like one piece under all the filth) |
Re: First Chain & Sprocket Change - Two Question!
can't believe you got the front sprocket nut off......
*round of applause* :smt038:smt038:smt038 In the same boat, I'v decided to try and get a local mobile mechanic to help. Scared i'll do some irreparable damage to the bike if I persist. Sorry can't say about the sprocket, sure someone will be along to help shortly. Cheers |
Re: First Chain & Sprocket Change - Two Question!
not sure about the sprocket as I've not looked, but if you have a chain splitter, it should be able to push the pins out even if they have been riveted, without having to grind the heads off.

Re: First Chain & Sprocket Change - Two Question!
It's advised to grind down the pin heads and then use the splitter. The way I remove endless chains is to get a short flat head screwdriver and put it in-between the links on the rear sprocket then hammer it till it splits. It does work and if your changing the sprockets at the same time as the chain I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.
Someone will be along to correct me if it does do damage. End of the day you could pick up a cheap dremmel and grind the pins down. Either that or get a metal saw to it but it will take a while!!! |
Re: First Chain & Sprocket Change - Two Question!
OEM chain is endless, you will have to cut through it (or the pin heads) or remove the swingarm.

Re: First Chain & Sprocket Change - Two Question!
just buy a cheap grinder, mine took about 15 seconds to cut through. Easy peasy!!

Ok... looks like I know I need to buy a cheap dremell type grinder for the chain... anyone have any thoughts on the second question about the sprocket???

Re: First Chain & Sprocket Change - Two Question!
It's meant to quieten down final drive. Mine has the bottom sprocket without any extra spacers. But I'm not familiar with the pointies, so wait for someone else :-P
Does the one removed from bike have anything to move it outward? I.e if you just put new one straight on, will the chain track be wrong? |
