How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
Assume you are patient, and generally good at imparting knowledge on others?
1 - 10 scale? Have you ever given up on someone? |
Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
Probably depends entirely on the student. Some people just have no coordination so take longer to learn, which in turn could try the instructors patience!

Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
I'll let you know - I am 'teaching' the wife ;)
OK I say 'teaching' because she just needs her UK licence, she has a US one and has only ever driven/learnt to drive automatics :) |
Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
YC had a go at teaching me offroad and I got up to 30mph :-D did almost shoot him through the windscreen though at one point haha. Not been in one since though, not really interested in driving. Biking on the other hand...
I think it very much depends on who it is you're trying to teach and you're ability to get it across to them without you both getting frustrated at each other, which is sometimes very difficult where parents are concerned. My mum kept offering to teach me but I knew without trying that that would go terribly wrong  Same with most things, some people have to re-do things several times, others don't. |
Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
My dad tried to help me learn to drive to save having as many lesson from my instructor.
Within 10 mins we were back home and dad paid for more lessons  |
Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
my mates dad is an actual driving instructor and if I remember correctly, his exact words were:
"I f***ing hate my dad. He taught me to drive. It's the worst thing he ever did." Have a look for britains worst learners on youtube  |
Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
Assuming they aren't completely unsuited to driving and you are reasonably patient, the main obstacle I can see is the relationship you have with the person concerned. Your spouse is less likely to obey you unquestioningly, than they would a driving instructor.

Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
its not too bad.. build up time wise, dont expect too much too soon and regular short practice is the best way, Confidence and learning when NOT to speak is the best advice I can give, be accurate and precise also.
I helped kitten inbetween main lessons eventually although we did it all at one point to get to the point where lessons would teach her how to pass the test... |
Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
I tried to teach my daughter and gave up fairly quickly :)
I am a CBT instructor, so have the patience of a saint, but when it's family & your own car everything goes out of the window. |
Re: How easy is it to teach someone to drive?
the car didnt bother me so much... it was just an object... insured if she crashed it.. I did point out that we werent likley to crash at any more than 30...
