Hello 650'ers....
 

hi to everyone on the forum.. been reading for a few weeks now but wasn't sure whether to sign up or not.

reason being.. i have a confession to make [-o< i don't actually own an SV!
i passed my test a few weeks back but am still on my DT 125 (did anyone have one?). anyway my mate rides a Versys 650 and really wants me to get a bigger bike. to be honest, i want one aswell - motorway is a bit s*** on an unfaired 125.
We've been looking at the SV and i'm pretty much sold on it; but before i put up the 125 for sale, i need to work out exactly what SV to go for, and what things to look out for when buying one. maybe you guys (and grls) can help me :-D In particular i wanted to know pros/cons of injection + carbs and the curvy/pointy debate. i can't make sense of much of it.

There is not really a pointy vs curvy debate, just good natured ribbing of each other. Of course, if you get a pointy I'll never speak to you again!

Curvy bikes have more rounded body work and frame, carburettor fed engines and were produced from 99-02.

Pointy bikes have more angular styling and boxy frame, injected engines and are the current model from 2002 on.

Not a lot of difference between the two models in terms of performance, ease of use or abilty. Those who own curvy's will like them, those who own pointies like them.

oooo thank you for that.... i'm not fussed, going to go for a naked i think. do you know about restriction, which one is cheaper (to get fitted at certificated)

also i wonder if anyone is going to the bike show in birmingham at the NEC next week?

Both versions of the bike are easy to restrict to 33bhp. The pointy (injected) model is easiest to do DIY as you get a replacement ECU complete with certificate. Just remove full power ECU and pluf in restricted one. Keep the full power ECU for when your restriction ends, flog the restricted ECU on for what you paid for it. These are often for sale second hand on here or Ebay for little money.

Curvys are restricted mechanically by adding some washers to the carbs to restrict air flow. Kits for this come up for sale second hand on here also. Not sure how you get it certified though. Someone like Plowsie or ASH will be along in a moment with the full scoop in restricting curvies.

welcome rayray....curvy....i believe they are easier to work on..i may be wrong as a lover of curvies.....whichever u choose great bikes so all is good, apart from the pointy!

Go for whichever you can afford/prefer the looks of in the pointy vs curvy debate.

Personally I'd go for a faired bike as it makes touring/long trips/motorways etc a lot more bearable. You may not want one now but after a year you may find yourself heading off somewhere on an adventure or using your bnew bigger bike in a different way. But then there's plenty of people here on nakeds who put the miles in so it's all personal choice.

quickest way to off-load your DT is to leave it locked/unlocked around grovehill/highfield area :)
