my bikes gone dead

I started my bike up ready for my journey home tonight at 5.15, i let the bike idle for a few mins whilst i got geared up and all was sweet. as i went to pull off the bike just died completely, went to restart and there was no power at all, the bike was on the trickle charger all night and was fine according to the lights.

i had to take the battery out and get a cab with it so i can charge it up, the thing that is worrying me now is that i have plugged it into the charger and is on the max light?

the terminals were all fine on the bike and i couldnt see why this would happen. any ideas?

Stupid things like side stand switch? (though lights should still work if it was this ) Failing that (and battery not guilty)...fuses?

Im getting a lift back to the bike in a few mins with the battery, i will have to test the fuse and side stand switch when i get there, fail in that im going to have to ring the recovery.

If it is a fuse & you fix it possibly worth taking a bit of extra care incase whatever cooked it re-occurs...no biggie.

anyway good luck - motorcycle fixing in the dark in the rain. Nice.

we went back to the bike last night and it started first time no problem. now it is home the same is happening again, completely dead.

This would be electrically related right ?

Hi Rory, I had the same problem as you, on a curvy too. If you remove the small black infill panel below the seat on right hand side (when sat on bike) You will see the starter solenoid, make sure the plug is seated ok and the fuse is seated ok too, you should see 2 fuses but I think one is a spare fuse. Hope this helps.

You said there's no power- do you mean it won't start, or is there literally no power at all, ie do the lights etc work? Basically the question here is, does it just affect the engine or is it systemic. Because if it's systemic then it's easy, if it's just the engine that's a wee bit harder

Iif it's lost all power then it's one of three things- blown the main fuse, or it has a break in continuity, or the starter relay has failed completely. Tony's spot on about the starter relay, it's the prime suspect if you lose all power, the fuse can come loose, the plug can come loose, and the entire unit can just fail over time (mine did- internal corrosion)

Have you ever noticed any weak starting, or the speedo jumping about lately?
