oh my clutch
 

can anyone confirm my suspicions that my clutch has gone :rolleyes:

basically i've gone to get the bike out the garage to give it a wash, put it in 1st to get it up onto the paddock stand and noticed the when i pull in the clutch its not engaging fully and the crank is turning over as you push it, its also hard to push

i last rode the bike on sunday and it was 100% normal, nothing out of the ordinary, got home and put it away......

i had my suspitions that the clutch was on its way out as it bites at the bottom when you let it out

now.... i ask because i was a little silly on sunday, basicaly the oil was low :mad: and i span the back wheel :-dd, there was the smell of burning clutch, but i rode it about 50 miles from there with out a problem and all was normal

also how much for the clutch :rolleyes:

edit: there is tension in the cable and i've fiddled about with it with no change

What does that mean?

Adjust the clutch as per standard (you know how to do this?) and then come back with your diagnosis if the issue has been resolved.

This burn out you did, So long as you were not dragging the clutch whilst doing so, will have not effected the clutch at all.

How much? Depends if you need to replace the whole thing or just the plates.

i adjusted the cable at the leaver to take up the slack and loosened it and that had no change so im taking a shot in the dark that plates are worn?

yeah so if the cable was slack that means the plates are worn?

Gavin, is this happening with the bike being cold i.e. the engine oil is cold and hasnt circulated around the engine? There is alot of drag when the oil is cold and hasnt circulated to lubricate the clutch plates properly - my SV is very hard to move about when i pull the clutch in and try and wheel it about in gear if the engine isnt warm.

mine conks out when you engage gear and its running, i topped up the oil and ran it for about 2 mins so the oil should have had time to circulate but still conks out when put into gear

Find a cephalopod on the forum, and search for his very informative post about clutch adjustment.

A little help with terminology may help us/you find the problem. When you pull the clutch lever, it DISengages the clutch and vise versa.

From the sound of it you're jumping to conclusions, the clutch is dragging a bit when cold and stationary, you've adjusted it with no real idea of what you're adjusting. Nothing there to suggest worn plates!

I don't mean to sound rude or anything but it does not sound to me like you don't know how to adjust the clutch properly. You can't do it simply by taking the slack out of the cable. As Chris has said, do a search for Sid Squids post on clutch adjustment.

But have you adjusted the pushrod properly?
