Has anyone used a petrol tank sealer they can recommend?

well petseal used to be the product of choice for many years, but I understand things have moved on, on another site I use they recomend this, not used it myself, but others have had good results with it.

Mine split on a seam recently and pored a tank of fuel all over my driveway. Petseal worked for me a treat!

In for the penny in for the pound, here goes :-

Wash tank thoroughly with fuel filtering it each time until you are satisfied the majority of the particles are gone (dont be too pedantic as the smaller ones are about to be captured forever in resin).

Remove the fuel tap and petrol can, buy some bolts the same thread as the ones you removed wax them (very well but not so well as to allow too much wax additive to enter the fuel just enough to release when the resin has dried) and insert into the bolt holes top and bottom (do not fit the cap and tap again until its set and finished).

Put plenty of paper on the floor to catch the falling resin mix then make up mixture and pour into tank (wear rubbers).

Work the mixture with the tank upside down at first moving the liquid around to ensure full coverage of the surface and work fairly quickly as it sets quite fast.

Lay tank on the newspaper to rest until set (you can check this by looking at the mixing pot for the resin) leave it for as long as you can to ensure its set properly (overnight).

Remove waxed bolts which should come out easily because of the wax and clean up the cut out for the fuel tap with a sharp knife. Re asssemble all parts as before refit fill and use!

Thats the instructions on petseal with a few common sense additions from me!

Darren,

I know it is a bit late but here goes...

I have never been keen on repairing rusty fuel tanks although I have done it. If it has rusted along one of the seams there is a fair chance that the damage is more extensive and if you were to run a wire wheel (on an angle grinder) all of the way around it would blow out in a few places that looked okay.

It could be cheaper and a lot less hassle in the long run to find yourself a good SH tank.
