Help desperately
 

My 99 curvy sv is having problems with the clutch i have just replaced the clutch cable thinking that was the problem but its not when i put the bike into gear & turn the throttle it goes without leaving the clutch out and once its in gear i cant get it back out.
Any info will be a great help

Have you adjusted the new cable properly.

Theres a thread somewhere on how to do it, if you're not sure, have a search...

yeah i have adjusted it properly could it be the clutch plates

No idea, you'll need to wait for somebody a bit more technical than me to come along, which they should do shortly...

it sounds like you need to adjust the clutch properly. It needs doing at both ends of the cable, not just at the lever.

The free play on the adjuster behind the front sprocket cover is important. If its done incorrectly then the clutch plates will not be moved apart properly when you pull the clutch lever in.

Do you have a service manual or haynes manual to hand? They explain the procedure to follow to adjust it properly.

The only manual i got is on a disc and its not very good i have adjusted the cable correctly its only when the engine gets warm that i start getting this problem

you have to adjust mechanism behind cover first.than adjust cable.
if problem is still there than your clutch is dragging.

I will echo what has been said as it does sound like that clutch cable hasn't been adjusted correctly.

I am sure there is a good write about how to adjust the clutch cable on the 650 somewhere. But from memory the basic steps are:

1. Remove the cover on the front sprocket (you must have done that if you changed the cable)
2. Take it all the adjust at both the lever & at the bottom of the cable.
3. Use a spanner & screw driver to adjust the worm drive. This is done by always keeping the screw driver on the bolt, loosening the nut with the spanner while keeping the bolt in place with the screw driver. Screw in the bolt until you feel it start to drive the clutch, then back it 1/4 of a turn. That 1/4 of a turn back off is a really important, it makes sure you are not lifting the clutch plates until you actually pull the lever in.
4. Adjust the bottom end of the cable until it is a straight line with the worm drive. It is the part I am a bit sketchy about. I know how to do it when I am looking at it, but I am a bit tired and can't really describe it at the moment. It looks a bit like the cable is at 11 o'clock. And lock in place.
5. Adjust the cable at the lever so there is a about a 1mm between the lever and bracket before it starts pulling the cable.
6. Move the handle bars to full left lock & full right lock to make sure the cable is being pulled when turning the bars and adjust accordingly.

Sorry if things don't make sense, but I am bit tired at the moment. I can consult the haynes manual to see what it says, but it is not that hard really.
