Battery Problems

I've just resurrected my curvy after leaving it in the garage for the last year. I left the battery connected to the Optimate for most of the time and it started up fine. I use it to commute 40 miles a day but now the battery hasn't got enough in it the following day to start it up. It was outputting 12.6 on the volt meter after being charged and then 11.8 after being left overnight. It's a Yuasa about 3 years old. Does anyone know if it can lose it's cold cranking amps or does it sound like a leak (something to do with the reg/rec.)

Check for leakage in the battey/loom.

Take off the -ve lead from the battery & connect the lead through a DMM & back to the battery with the ignition off. That should tell you if anything is sucking juice from the battery.

Cheers........ but being ignorant do you mean take off the live and run through volt meter and back?

DOH!...... just seen my mistake above.

I have disconnected both the battery terminals and run via multimeter and not showing any leaks. It's been on the Optimate all night (and Optimate showing Green). Giving 12.7 reading from battery but only gave me one go at starting it up and died so I'm now thinking the battery is definitely kaput. :smt102

Re: Battery Problems

Battery's will go dead if they are just left to compelty discharge; salts form, which cant be used to create electrical energy anymore

Time for a new battery for you I think :(

and start riding the SV more :D

Cheers for that.........

The cheapest quote I could find for a Yuasa YT12A-BS is £68.99 (incl vat & deliv). I only paid £44 for one two years ago! I thought we were in a recession, anyone know anywhere cheaper?

Does it have to be a yuassa? What about a dynovolt or something?

Check out this thread from a couple of weeks ago

The most up to date range of batteries have better capabilities and are the ones to go for.

Batteryman kindly set up the offer for the YTZ range (equivalents). Alternatively I get mine from Honda dealers, should be a straight £50 though I've heard of some wanting more, just ask.
