Idle speed acting up

Hi everyone. My son's sv650s has gained an odd problem and I'm wondering if anyone has come across this before.
Let's say we warm the bike up and then adjust the idle speed to 1400. The bike will stay at that speed for a few minutes and then gradually gain revs until it's about 3000 (worst case was 4000). So we adjusted the idle speed down again to 1400 but then gradually the idle would run slower and slower until it stalls. I've had the tank off and checked the idle grub is in position and the tension seems fine to me (spring has torque).
This is the twin carb version 2001.
Any ideas anyone:confused:

They are all twin carb untill they went injected, no hardly-driveable traits on SV :-P

Sticky choke plungers would be a good starting point.
