Brake pedal sticking.

Hi - I've been out on the SV today having not riden it for about a week and a half I have noticed that both the gear lever and back brake pedal were sticking.
I have managed to free up the gear lever with some WD but the rear brake pedal is really sticky and pretty much just stays down when depressed.
Am I gonna have to strip this down to sort it out or should I just persist with doses of WD40 until it frees up - anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

D

Re: Rear brake pedal...

I was advised not to use WD40 as it strips the grease out. You might need to disassemble it to replace the grease.

Never heard this recommended but i've managed to squirt chain lube in in the past and loosened them up that way.

I have, about a month ago, salt on the roads seem to just clog them up.
Easily taken off, just take them about, clean them, and lube them up..

Did that once, and just lubing them up after every wash, doing fine for me..
Seems quite alot of SV's have this problem...

Take it off and grease it, it's not hard to do.

Do you have to remove the entire foot rest/master cylinder etc. or can you just remove the pedal itself?

thanks

I just took the whole thing off, cleaned and greased.
Will do the same in a few weeks, feel the salt stiffening it up.

and the springs get crappy too. Got new ones to go on mine as they've stretched a bit.

I did this last weekend.

Remove the two allen bolts holding on the rear brake/footpeg assy. (I needed breaker bar for more leverage)
Remove the bolt from behind the heel plate.
Carefully manouver assy and disconnect springs, make sure you're not scratching anything.
Remove large allen key bolt that holds the footpeg on from behind.
Footpeg and brake lever will come of hanger - don't loose washer.
Clean up mating surfaces with a brass brush/wire wool to remove oxidisation.
You will see a track around the boss on the footpeg that sticks through the brake lever - Grease up well

Assembly is reverse of dis-assembly.

Don't hit yourself in the face with pliers, failing to stretch the spring back into place

Check brake light switch is set correctly.

HTH!

If you don't have the time to do the above, squirt some brake cleaner on it & pump the pedal a few times.

Then apply chain lube, and pump the pedal again - that'll help to re-grease it until you can strip it & grease it properly.
