How much would you pay....

......for a second-hand gearbox?

The 2nd gear on my Thunderace finally convinced me to repair the gearbox after popping into neutral yet again, but today it was mid corner and it getting dangerous. It usually happens between 4k and 5k revs and I've been getting around it by short-shifting, but as Sid Squid said, it's only going to get worse. :(

I'll be replacing it with one out of a YZF 750 which means I'll then have a 6 speed box, and it's a common upgrade to the Ace because it slots right in. I've been offered a complete gearbox in good condition and the bloke said "make me an offer", but I've no idea what it's worth.

So, how much would you offer?

Cheers,

Paul :D

How do you know it's in good condition?

Haynes manual + feeler gauge first if there is any doubt. I'd probably give £25 a try and see if he laughs or not.

Just out of interest, is the Thunderace a cassette gearbox? Can you get it out without having to drop the engine and split the casing?

Is the 6 speed going to be a wider spread than your 5? or is it just a closer ratio?

£25 sounds very close to offending, but otherwise I have no idea :smt102

Nope, it's a drop the engine out job. Isn't it the same issue that you had with your Thundercat?

Not sure about that but I'm going to have a word with Mick at Essential Rubber to see what difference it made to his bike. Apparently motorway fuel consumption improves as the engine runs at a lower speed in top.

Look at other, available motors to drop stright in. Price up the gasket set required, and work out how long it will take you. Budget a day or so to strip it down, then start inspection. It may well be that the selector forks for instance are out of tollerance, and what's probably being sent to you are the input and output shafts, with cogs, this would then add time to fix and money to your calculations.

Offer accordingly

Oh yeah with more gears there won't you need different selector drum and shift cam too?

£50 i think would be in the right ball park, but make the person know that its a negotiation. I paid £25 for an SV one.
