Raise shift lever on '01
 

Hi folks.

I've only been riding a couple years now finally decided that I should get a pair of real boots for riding. Yesterday was the first nice day here in southern Ontario (Canada), so I got the bike prepped (oil, tires, coolant, fresh coat of wax, etc), got on all my gear [including my fancy new boots] (it was only 4C) and headed out for the first time of the season. For the life of me I could not get my foot under the shift lever with the new boots. I ended up sitting almost on the tank with my foot bent at a weird angle to get it to shift and even then I was missing shift like crazy.

Is there an easy way to raise the shift lever about 3/4" without having to fork over huge cash for a rearset?

Please note: These are not a cheap pair of boots. They were a $400 pair of Joe Rockets [on sale for $200 at a local bike shop!!]. They fit great too, so I can't blame the boots. From day one, though, I've learned to ride wearing a pair of high-top Alpinestar "Stunt" shoes/boots.

Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks in advance!

Undo the 10mm bolt on the engine end of the shift lever. Take the bolt out, pull the spline off the shaft & move it round. This should then in turn lift the shift lever up :)

I thought about that, but do you think I can really gain 3/4" without screwing up the way the bike shifts? I ask this because by changing the angular position of the shift arm on the tranny shaft will cause the connection rod to no longer operate at a 90 degree angle to the shift arm. Could this cause binding?

Undo the locknuts on the linkage rod, rotate the rod until you're happy with the pedal position.

Important - one end of the rod has a reverse thread - it should be apparent when looking at the threads.

Hi again guys.

Sid, the rod is completely out of travel, so I did what mister c suggested. Worked great. Just went for a 30km ride. My boot fits perfect now and the shifter feels fine.

If the rod has no travel left then it was either in the wrong place to start with or possibly the wrong rod for your footrest plate was fitted.
The original parts, (in the right spot!), have plenty of adjustment for even the chunkiest boots - they can even be adjusted to suit the Daytonas with a tall heel made for girls and shortar5e boys!
