K&N Air Filter
Thinking of getting a K&N for my first air filter replacement. Bike is a K3 on 7500 miles, anyone tried one? Is it worth doing?

Re: K&N Air Filter
Wisdom on the Org. says not much better than standard, obviously service life is longer.
BMC race filter (not the road version) is a better option |
Re: K&N Air Filter
Nailed one onto my curvy and it made a noticeable improvement... or is that just because it growls more......;) there is however a significant increase in the size of the air inlet aperture over the standard element, so they must get more air in at higher revs.....

Re: K&N Air Filter
Depends what you want to do. They do make sense as they're washable, but won't add power.
A proper race filter will require a rejet. |
Re: K&N Air Filter
Do they make it sound better?
Its worth it for that alone. |

Re: K&N Air Filter
Define "better quality". Probably better filtration, I'm not too familiar with the flow of the pointy KN, but the big advantage is that when you degrease and re-oil an oil matrix filter like the KN or the BMC is that it's just as good as a new filter. Do 100000miles and spend £5 on oil and wash stuff instead of £100 on replacement filters.
I don't think it will add much power. |
Re: K&N Air Filter
I thought aftermarket filters provided significantly worse filtration.

Re: K&N Air Filter
I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that. Including many very high mileage bikes that have run with oiled matrix filters since they were tuned straight after break-in. There's plenty tales from some rsehole down the pub though...
P.s lots of off road bikes come with oily foam filters as standard, and which would you expect to need to filter out lots of dust... |
Re: K&N Air Filter
I can only quote from this (non bike specific) site, from the days of a previous interest of mine (making Calibra Turbo's go fast).
http://www.max-boost.co.uk/max-boost...mentairfilters High mileage with a foam filter doesn't prove or disprove anything. |
