info on chain cleaning
 

Think the general consensus on the .org is to clean your chain with kerosene/paraffin but for those of you who still swear by wd40 despite what people say; I found this article scroll down to the bottom to see wd40's affects on a sealed bearing.

As soon as my cheap can of chain cleaner runs out I'll be on the paraffin me thinks. Probably cheaper than penetrant anyway.

hmmm interesting, i might need a rethink as I always use wd40 to clean my change before relubing......didn't realise i was doing anything wrong - cheers for the info!

cheers dave - will help me to start really looking after my bike fully/properly, as I used wd40 on the 650 chain... silly sausage.

I've never trusted wd40 really, only ever use it for degreasing, cleaning up plastics, and getting out rusty bolts. I use wurth equivelent when possible because of the rumours wd40 contains low level acids that'll corrode stuff if left applied to a surface for a while.
So that combined with the fact it's a penetrant would put me off using it on my chain.

Then again lots of people have sworn by it for years.

WD40 is a water displacer, hence the name WD - the fact that it happens to degrease and lubricate is secondary...

Chain cleaner to clean the chain

Chain lubricant to lube the chain

Simple;)

Can't 100% tell if your apposed to wd40 or not in that post lone wolf but are you basically pointing out 'of course it will displace grease from the orings'

i'm not opposed to WD, it has it's purpose, displacing water - my point is use the product for the job you intend to do...

WD can degrease, it can even lubricate, but it will do neither as well as a degreaser or a lubricant

My thoughts exactly. Also WD40 is expensive to use as a chain cleaner when you get 5litres of parafin for a couple of quid in B & Q I really dont understand why anybody still uses WD40...
