North Korea Vs South Korea...

the fights coming, you can just see it boiling....

Why is there so much hostility between the north and south? Surley they should all hate the US?

My history on Korea isn't very good at all, but is it a little like East and West Germany went?

Accusations of moving border poles, declerations of war if the south joins a US led Proliferation Security Initiative against shipments of weapons of mass destruction.

Read the workers don't get paid either, their wages go directly to the government, then they get a % back.

Man I wouldn't want to live there...... *Crosses off places to move to list*

The North is a crazy place, total citizen control. You can only buy a radio off the government pre tuned to the Government channel with inspections to check it's not tampered with. If you've ever got a quiet hour google it a bit. There's a national dress code and hairstyle guide and fat women aren't allowed to ride motorcycles apparently. Saying anything negative about your life or the country will get you and your family put away. Stops them bloody moaners i bet.

Here's an idea - try reading up a little on the Korean war - this Wikipedia article is a good start...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_war

Short version is after the war the newly-liberated Korean peninsula was divided into two zones, one controlled by the USSR, the other controlled by the USA. As you suggest, a bit like East and West Germany.

North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea triggering the Korean war which, technically, never ended - it's been a state of ceasefire for more than 50 years now.

North Korea is an incredibly insular post-Stalinist state with the whole personality cult schtick around the leader, Kim Jong-Il (successor to his father, Kim Il-Sung). It's a fairly nutty place, no economy to speak of, food shortages, energy shortages, a country that's been on the verge of collapse for the last decade. It also has something like the world's third largest army and half a century of effective government propaganda means the population have, generally, bought into the party line wholesale. That's the real difference between the Korean situation and the former Soviet satellite states - the entire population have effectively been brainwashed so revolution is relatively unlikely.

No, it isn't what communism is.

Communism is, roughly speaking, a socio-political-economic model where private ownership ceases to exist and all economic productivity contributes to the greater good. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

Stalinism, on the other hand, is a system of totalitanarian dictatorship where combination of fear, oppression and a personality cult combines to allow the leadership to maintain absolute control of the populace.

The only real overlap is the centralised control - a communist state can give rise to totalitarian rule, but so can a fascist state (cf. Germany 1933-45).

North Korea accused South of doing exactly the same thing (moving a set of border polls) about 8 hours ago. :)

North has basically said "put it back where you found it, or we'll shove it up your..."

EDIT: Oh yea, and the South are considering joining a US Security initiative to prevent the shipment of WMD by sea. The North has said "Join the US, and we'll kill you all."

Nice folks in the North of Korea aren't they?
