Tying the brake lever back overnight

Then what? Do the bubbles rise up, pass through the open master cylinder and into the resevoir, allowing you to just untie the lever and go?

Or are the bubbles forced down into the caliper and you need to bleed from there again before it's rolling stoppie time?

OK, 24 hours later and nobody knows! Let's try it this way...

Thems that have tied their lever back overnight, what did you do in the morning?

Just seen this post. This is based on theory, btw. I did this but it turned out my problem wasn't air so it made no difference.

With the brake tied back, it should put the system under pressure and the air might find its way up the tube to somewhere near the master cylinder. It won't get to the reservoir until you release the lever, as the system is closed while the lever is pulled back.

It might also allow the brake piston seals to relax in a position with the piston nearer the disc, and so remove some lever travel that way, but this is pure guesswork on my part.

+1.QUICK BLEED and the system should be clear of air

Let lever return to rest, watch a few bubbles rise into reservoir. Revel in firm brake lever. Has worked many times for me.

Do you need to leave the lid off of the reservoir?

Nope.

Don't tie it too tight!!!!! Squeeze the lever to the normal amount you use then tie it there

Is this just as effective as bleeding the system then? But easier?

No it's no substitute for proper bleeding. Also only seems to help when you actually have some manner of wierdness that means you have a trapped bubble somewhere.

I have no idea how it works. My best guess is the extended time under pressure allows the gas to dissolve in the fluid and so make its way to somewhere it is more easily removed.
