Just thought I'd say Hi and ask a quick question
 

Hi all I'm Ryan and I signed up to the forum yesterday as I am considering buying an SV650 for my first bike. I'm 20 from Wakefield West Yorkshire :D Got my CBT on Saturday and will be putting in for my bike test in the near future.

What I was wanting to ask is what I could get with my budget. I am wanting to get a good condition SV650 (and restrict it to 33hp of course), leathers, boots, helmet and insure it all for under £2500. Would this be do-able or am I asking too much? :D

Also, if anyone could suggest a good set of leathers, boots and an helmet at a good price I'd be very grateful. I'm very new to the world of bikes.

Very do-able, but you may have to travel around to get the kit. EG George Whites in Swindon has such a large stock you can get fully kitted up, 2 piece leathers, boots, helmet, gloves.. for like maybe £350? Unless there's a similar"bike superstore" place up north :)

Insurance for me is £500 and I'm only 17 on my 2000 Curvy with a listed value of £2000. (That means if it gets nicked, I pay my £650 excess and still get £1350, so I only lose £50 :)

Run quotes with confused.com, don't add any modifications as this will impede your quote by adding up to thousands.. IE If i say mine's restricted, it goes up to £1250 or something.. *doh*

I'd recommend a HJC FS-10 helmet, which is I think £99.99 from George Whites.. although there are cheaper avalible. GW can deliver stuff so if you try one on in a shop near you, you can order the right size without having to travel to get it.

It's safe and has an inbuilt sunvisor system which is very very handy. I have one (albeit the carbon one) and it's very comfy :)

As for boots and leathers, well, probably a set of Frank Thomas stuff would be good for you, as it's pretty cheap and the quality is perfectly good. :)

You can pick up a decent condition Curvy for £1300-£1500 if you look on Ebay hard enough, and keep your eye out here as people often sell a little bit cheaper, as we're all SV fans and tend to look after them sort of thing :)

I reckon it is yeah.

Go secondhand on leathers (teknics are decent, and cheap), and boots. Got MYC kitted out pretty cheaply this way.

Get the cheapest bike you can find, you will need some money in reserve just in case of unforseen issues with it. Bikes in the region of £1200 should fit the bill. Should get you a 2000 or a 2001.

TPO insurance will probably be £500 or more. I don't think it is ever economical to claim for a bike of such a price. I.e £1200 bike, less a £500 excess is only £700. Your insurance will at least double the next year, and it will load your premiums for 5 years. The insco win every time.

you can get a new set of leathers for £135 boots 35 gloves 15 helmet 60 insurance will be tpft that all depends where you live etc, but perfectly possible to get a decent bike and rest of kit for money you have. maybe buy your kit first then get bike when you know how much you have left, get ins quote first, have a nice day.

The kind of kit that costs that much will be absolutely useless when you need it to do its job. The only thing on your list that might be up to scratch is the helmet, because it's the only thing that has to be to a set govt approved standard. The rest will be cheap and nasty garbage.

All that sounds ideal! I'll be happy if I can get a decent set of leathers and an helmet for under £400. I'll have an ask around and see if there are any big bike stores around here somewhere. If not, I might have to travel a bit! :D
May I ask who your insurance is with? I've had a few quotes already from Bennets and places like that and I've been quoted over £550 TPFT!

Is ebay usually a decent place to look for decent s/h leathers? I will keep an eye out if so. Ideally, I do want a bike in that sort of price range so I can spend a little more on some quality leathers and helmet.

I notice that you're from Leeds Chris. Do you know of any decent bike garages around the Leeds / Wakefield areas? I'd like to have a look around at some places and get an idea of what the bikes look / feel like.

Thanks bluefishman, like you say, I think I will get my kit and insurance sorted before I buy the bike. Then I know how much I've got to play with.

I had a feeling that some "budget" type leathers / boots may be a bit dodgy. To be honest, it's an area I'd rather spend a little bit more in so that I'm as safe as I can be on my bike. What type of leathers do you reccommend Lozzo in a reasonable price range? I'd just like to get as many suggestions as I can at the moment so that I have plenty of options to look at. I won't have passed my test for a couple of months so I'm in no rush.

If leathers seem to be a bit costly, consider textiles. These have the benefit of a removable winter lining (most of the time) so in winter you can still be warm, most are water proof aswell so you dont need to get a set of waterproofs to accompany your leathers. Spada do some good textile kit for a good price :)

You'll be able to get a good SV for your money aswell - I expect you can get a very tidy 1999-2002 bike for what you want to spend, and perhaps a 2003 fuel injected bike if someone is generous enough :rambo:

I've found Motorcycle Direct and Direct Choice brokers (through Axa) give me the best prices, but it may be different from you :)

My current policy is with Direct Choice/axa.


Btw, don't buy leathers and helmets from Ebay. The whole idea is you try them on in a store and see if they're comfortable. :smt040
