Looking for a Knackered Engine to learn more about them?

Basically i want to learn more about bike maintenance so i have been looking at buying an old engine on ebay, a haynes manual and then just ripping it apart in the garage to try and learn a bit about them.

Trouble is im not to sure which one would be best? SV650 would be ideal, but cant find one anywhere.

Seen a CBR 600RR engine on ebay

and also more, any views?

I'd just buy a **** bike and do it up, best way to learn about maintenance/servicing/fixing.

don't worry too much about learning about engines. Way things are going they're becoming disposable. And for a 4 stroke engine to go bang in a big way it'll take the engine cases etc .. .with it = new engine anyway. If you want to learn about engines buy a 2 smoke.

BTW you wanna learn something useful, learn about electrics, then you'll be in the money and more useful in the future.

I'll have been looking at buying an old bike, RS250 would be nice, have to have a look into that.

Just wanna get on with it, but dont particually want to rip mine to bits while it still works.

As others have said, I would recommend rebuilding something which isn't terminally bust, so that it works again - maybe a single cylinder that needs a rebuild.

Otherwise you'll just end up taking it to pieces and thinking "Oooo, that's what a valve looks like.... that's what a piston looks like etc." End of it all, you'll end up with a load of pieces that you won't be arsed to be back together, as it won't work anyway!

Much better if there is a purpose to taking it apart and putting it back together other than just learning!
