Looking for a Knackered Engine to learn more about them?
Basically i want to learn more about bike maintenance so i have been looking at buying an old engine on ebay, a haynes manual and then just ripping it apart in the garage to try and learn a bit about them.
Trouble is im not to sure which one would be best? SV650 would be ideal, but cant find one anywhere. Seen a CBR 600RR engine on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Honda-CBR600rr-2003-engine_W0QQitemZ140315965196QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item140315965196&_trksid=p32 86.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A2|39%3A1|240%3A131 8|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50 and also more, any views? |

I'll tell matt about this post and I expect he'l be in touch. Or you could just send him a PM anyway |
Re: Looking for a Knackered Engine to learn more about them?
I'd just buy a **** bike and do it up, best way to learn about maintenance/servicing/fixing.

Re: Looking for a Knackered Engine to learn more about them?
don't worry too much about learning about engines. Way things are going they're becoming disposable. And for a 4 stroke engine to go bang in a big way it'll take the engine cases etc .. .with it = new engine anyway. If you want to learn about engines buy a 2 smoke.

Re: Looking for a Knackered Engine to learn more about them?
As others have said, I would recommend rebuilding something which isn't terminally bust, so that it works again - maybe a single cylinder that needs a rebuild.
Otherwise you'll just end up taking it to pieces and thinking "Oooo, that's what a valve looks like.... that's what a piston looks like etc." End of it all, you'll end up with a load of pieces that you won't be arsed to be back together, as it won't work anyway! Much better if there is a purpose to taking it apart and putting it back together other than just learning! |
